MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Millersville University director of athletics Miles Gallagher has announced the hiring of Evan Anthony as head coach of the women's swimming program.
Anthony has quickly risen through the coaching ranks as an assistant at a pair of highly successful collegiate programs, and he brings to Millersville an intimate familiarity with the PSAC and region as he graduated from nearby Warwick High School before a career as a student-athlete at Shippensburg University and a stint as an assistant at Villanova.
"We are excited to welcome Evan back to Lancaster County, and we look forward to him continuing to build a program that is on the rise," said Gallagher. "He is a young coach with a great passion for teaching the sport. He has been around successful teams throughout his career, and I believe that he will bring that to Millersville."
"I am extremely excited and thankful to become the next women's swimming coach at Millersville University," said Anthony. "I would like to thank Miles Gallagher for the opportunity to be part of the family and lead the program. As a former PSAC student-athlete at Shippensburg, I am excited to be back in the conference. Being in such a great community and school, I am confident Millersville swimming will continue to reach great success in the classroom and pool."
After graduating from Shippensburg, Anthony immediately dove into the coaching profession with a graduate assistant position at Wingate--one of the top Division II programs in the country. At the 2021 NCAA Division II Championships, he helped the women's team to a sixth-place finish and the men's team to a seventh-place finish. Anthony worked primarily with the sprint groups and recruited both in the United States and internationally. Wingate totaled 137 All-America performances in his two seasons on the staff. Most recently, Anthony was a member of the 2022 and 2023 Big East Coaching Staff of the Year and part of back-to-back Big East championships. He served as the director of international recruiting while also helping one female swimmer to the NCAA Division I Championships.
Anthony will now bring those experiences as a student-athlete and assistant coach to Millersville, a program that last year set school records for most athletes and most points scored at the PSAC Championships.
"My goal is to provide all student-athletes with the best overall experience during their collegiate careers," said Anthony. "I will use all the different training styles I have learned and implemented over the years to design a system that will help reach individual and team goals. In addition to training, I will build upon a strong team culture to make our team a family and to have an impact on Millersville and the surrounding community. One of my favorite--and what I believe to be the most important part of coaching--is getting to know the athletes beyond swimming. I strive to provide an environment where they want to work hard, achieve their goals, and love what they are doing. I am also looking forward to connecting with former Millersville swimmers and keeping them part of the Marauder family."
While he was a student-athlete at Shippensburg, Anthony coached youth swimmers at Bent Creek Country Club in Lancaster. In 2019, he graduated cum laude with a degree in mathematics with a concentration in secondary education and minor in coaching. He received a master's degree in sports management from Wingate in 2021.
