Late rally by the Marauders secures conference win over the Huskies

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Marauders snapped their losing streak on Wednesday evening after defeating the Bloomsburg Huskies 16-12. With even scoring throughout the first three quarters, Millersville generated an offense spark in the fourth to outscore Bloomsburg 6-1 which created their four-goal margin to secure the PSAC East victory.

Head coach Kaitlyn Hafdell credited the Marauders attack in the final quarter of action in Millersville's win, "We moved the ball quickly and capitalized on our transition work which we've been working on during practices," said Hafdell. "Our attack was able to see the options in the net and were unselfish with the ball."

The Marauders fourth quarter was their best as they fired off a game-high 18 shots and won 5 draw controls. Millersville also picked up 10 ground balls and forced six Bloomsburg turnovers.

Ashlyn Simonetti was efficient for Millersville as she scored three goals and notched a new season-high of four assists and seven points on the day. Rachel Keeney and Hayden Corcoran each scored three goals and dished out one assist. Adding two goals each were Mary Moraca, Charlotte Lasak, and Liv Genovese. Ella Linthicum dished out two assists and tallied one goal for the Marauders.

Millersville improves to 7-6 overall and 4-4 in the PSAC East, while Bloomsburg drops to 6-7 overall and 3-5 in conference action. With the victory, the Marauders moved to fourth in the PSAC East standings after sharing that place with the Huskies.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Back-and-forth action limited either team from taking a lead in the first quarter. After Bloomsburg tied the score 4-4, they looked to take a lead after firing two consecutive shots, but both missed wide. The Marauders transitioned the ball into their attacking end and Corcoran scored to edge Millersville 5-4 at the end of the first.
  • Corcoran opened the second quarter the same way she ended the first by tallying another goal to give Millersville a two-goal lead. After Genovese tallied her first goal of the game to maintain Millersville's two goal lead, Bloomsburg rallied back and score two goals to tie the Marauders 7-7 at the half.  The Huskies fired off 13 shots in the second and Morgan Scott made a game-high of five saves in goal.
  • Bloomsburg looked to gain the lead after scoring in the first two minutes of the third, but Linthicum answered back to even the score 8-8. After Millersville score two consecutive goals to lead the Huskies 10-9, Bloomsburg scored two of their own goals with less than 1:35 in the third which led the Marauders 11-10 heading into the final quarter of action.
  • With Bloomsburg leading 12-11 in the fourth, the Marauders offense was relentless and generated a 4-0 run which lifted Millersville past Bloomsburg. The Marauders held the Huskies to shooting four shots in the fourth and disrupted Bloomsburg's transitions as they went 1-for-5 in clears.
