MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Marauders survived a late comeback by the Rams to defeat Shepherd 15-11 on Wednesday evening for Millersville's third consecutive win. Millersville led through the first half and created a three goal margin in the third quarter which was erased by the Rams who scored five consecutive goals to take a 11-9 lead entering the final quarter of regulation. The Marauders' offense fought back and tallied six goals while holding the Rams scoreless in the fourth to regain their lead and beat Shepherd in the PSAC East match-up.
"What really motivated the girls was our third quarter," said head coach Kaitlyn Hafdell. "We weren't performing to our best ability, and I wanted the offense to prove themselves."
"I put the game in their hands, and they took advantage of Shepherd in the fourth quarter," said Hafdell. "They showed they're a quality attacking group and came out on top today."
12 of Millersville's 15 goals can be credited to Liv Genovese and Rachel Keeney who led the Marauder offense with six goals each. The sophomore, Keeney, recorded three of Millersville's four goals in the first quarter and fired off a team-high of eight shots, seven of which were on goal. Genovese recorded seven shots on goal and won seven of Millersville's 14 draw controls.
The victory improves the Marauders' record to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the PSAC East. The Shepherd Rams fall to 5-6 overall and 1-5 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Marauders scored two consecutive goals from Keeney and Corcoran to lead Shepherd 2-0 in the first eight minutes of action. The Rams tallied their first goal after a second attempt shot from a Shepherd attacker put the Rams on the board. Keeney would score back-to-back goals to increase the Marauders lead 4-1 with 2:18 remaining. The Rams would score their second goal of the quarter at 0:57 to trail Millersville by two.
- Even scoring in the second quarter maintained the Marauders' two goal lead at the half. The Rams fired off a game-high of nine shots in the second and Morgan Scott recorded three saves. With 2:27 till the half, Shepherd scooped up a ground ball off a Millersville turnover and scored to tie the game 6-6. The Marauders' offense capitalized on two free position attempts to lead the Rams 8-6 at halftime.
- After Genovese scored her third goal of the game, the Shepherd offense tallied five unanswered goals in the third quarter to lead Millersville 11-9. The Rams defense forced seven Millersville turnovers and limited the Marauders' to taking just one shot on goal.
- Genovese and Keeney were resilient in the fourth quarter and scored three goals each to lift the Marauders over Shepherd. Millersville scored two goals from free position attempts and fired off a game-high of 14 shots. The Rams attempted to decrease their deficit in the last minute of regulation, but Morgan Scott recorded two saves and maintained the Marauders' 15-11 win.
