MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Millersville women's lacrosse team notched back-to-back wins on Chryst Field after defeating the Wildcats 20-11 on Saturday afternoon. Wilmington stayed within close distance as they trailed the Marauders 7-5 at the half, but Millersville was effective in the third quarter as they outscored the Wildcats on 7-2 and limited Wilimington to four shots. The Marauders' lead would stretch in the final quarter of action as Millersville defeated the Wildcats by a nine-goal margin. The Marauders improve to 3-2 overall while Wilimington drops to 4-3 this season.
"It was the unselfish play, off-ball movement, structure of our plays, and the control that the attack had to help us get the win today," said head coach Kaitlyn Hafdell. "Once we took a deep breath and settled into the game, we were able to keep our composure and get that stretch of a lead in the third quarter."
The Marauders' third quarter offensive surge would be credited to Charlotte Lasak, Mary Moraca, Ashlyn Simonetti, Rachel Keeney, and Hayden Corcoran with Lasak and Moraca tallying two goals each. Millersville's defense was key to creating a large lead as they only allowed four shots in the third. Liv Genovese was crucial to Millersville's offense as she led the team in goals with five.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Marauders would score first after Corcoran tallied her first goal of the game in the first 4o seconds of action. Millersville would lead 2-0 before the Wildcats would get on the board. Back-and-forth action limited either team from creating offensive momentum for 10 minutes. Millersville broke through and was awarded a free position attempt where Genovese would score give the Marauders a 3-1 lead.
- Wilmington would score three consecutive goals in the second quarter to tie the Marauders 4-4 with 6:29 till the half. Genovese would capitalize on two free position attempts to edge the Marauders 6-4 over the Wildcats. Wilmington and Millersville would both score with 1:30 remaining in the second and the Marauders would maintain their two-goal lead heading into halftime.
- Millersville was effective on both ends in the third quarter to outscore Wilmington 7-2. Scoring five consecutive goals, Millersville would lead 12-6 before the Wildcats found the back of the net and their defense was key, allowing just four shots in the quarter.
- The Wildcats would cut their lead as close as six goals in the fourth, but Millersville's consistency assisted in outscoring Wilmington 6-4 in the final quarter of regulation. Clare Roussey, Kaleigh Funk, Corcoran, Keeney, and Genovese would score for Millersville, Genovese tallied two goals for the Marauders. Keeney would notch Millersville's final goal of the game to give the Marauders the nine-goal victory on Saturday.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Moraca, Corcoran, and Keeney would each notch a hat trick against the Wildcats. Lasak tallied two goals and Simontetti, Roussey, Funk, and Kaleigh Dunn would each score once.
- Keeney dished out a team-high of two assists.
- Genovese fired off a team-high of 11 shots, eight of which were on goal.
- Scott and Lasak scooped up five ground balls each.
- Millersville held the edge in shots (48-25) and ground balls (32-20).
- The Marauders were successful on 14-of-18 clears while Wilmington went 10-for-20.
- Wilmington was forced to 18 turnovers, compared to the Marauders' 17.

- On Scott's performance in the goal: "Morgan saved our defense today on numerous offensive drives by Wilmington. She got the quick saves and was smart with her decisions on the clears. When you have a goalie that's able to come on top after a save, it's becomes key for our defense. She stepped up and handled pressure very well today."
