| By:

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville wrestling team had a commendable performance against a field of nearly 300 wrestlers in the annual "Shorty" Hitchcock Classic. Devin Flannery and Brandon Connor both recorded runner-up finishes in their weight classes.

Flannery (133), backed by two technical falls and one major decision, advanced to the championship match. However, he fell to Bo Bassett 23-4 to earn the runner-up position with a 3-1 record. Flannery was the defending champ and had also finished as the runner-up once before.

At 165 pounds, Connor easily worked his way to the championship match with a fall and two technical falls. He concluded with a 4-1 record as he fell to Peyton Hall from West Virginia in the final match.

In the 141 weight bracket, freshman Aiden Micheli had one fall and a major decision to back up his 3-2 record, claiming the fourth-place spot. Andrew Vogelbacher (174) wrestled his way into sixth place, obtaining a 3-2 record on the day. Vogelbacher logged one major decision, and the two other matches were close as he won by decision.

THOUGHTS FROM JERRY BOLAND

  • IMPRESSIONS ON THE DAY: "I thought we performed well today. We continued to improve on dictating the pace of the match for three periods. We wrestled well in all three positions. We also have some work to do. I know there are guys that aren't satisfied with how the day ended. They will use that as motivation moving forward."
  • SEASON OPENER: "We just finished three weekends of tough competition. Our guys were challenging open the season and they will benefit from this part of our schedule. Now they have some time to recover and get ready for ESU. Dual meets are always fun and it being our first conference dual gives it a little more excitement."
