Millersville capitalizes on Bloomsburg's turnovers in a 60-59 victory

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Four different Marauders totaled double-digits to assist in Millersville's 60-59 victory over the Huskies. Millersville entered Wednesday night haven't beating Bloomsburg at Nelson Field House since 2016. The victory gives the Marauders their first win of the New Year, which breaks their three-game losing streak and tallies their second conference win of the season.

Millersville (7-4, 2-4 PSAC) scored 25-points from 23 Bloomsburg (2-8 overall, 0-6 PSAC) turnovers. The Marauders were led in scoring by Marin Miller who shot her season best from behind the arc. Miller went 5-of-8 for three-pointers and shot 44% from the floor to total 19 points. Makiah Shaw marked her fifth game this season with double-digits, scoring 14 points while also grabbing three rebounds for the Marauders. Off the bench, Beverly tallied her season high of 12-points and five field goals made. Beverly also grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shots. Taylor Langan totaled 10 points, scoring eight-points in the second half of the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Marauders took an early 6-0 lead after capitalizing on three consecutive Huskie turnovers, Shaw tallied four of those points for Millersville. Despite totaling six turnovers early, Bloomsburg quickly found their rhythm caught up to the Marauders to tie the game 13-13. The Huskies hit a three-pointer with a minute remaining to create their first lead of the night. With 30 seconds left in the first, Miller utilized a La'Shyra Williams screen to drain a three-pointer and even the score 18-18.
  • Bloomsburg outscored Millersville 16-9 in the second quarter, taking advantage of a struggling Millersville offense. The Marauders made 4-of-15 shots from the floor, attempted one three-pointer, and went 1-for-2 from the free throw line. The Huskies were leading Millersville 34-25 until a buzzer beater shot from Langan cut the Marauders deficit by seven to end the first half.
  • Turnovers prohibited the Huskies from holding on to their lead. With Bloomsburg leading 42-40, Millersville capitalized on the Huskies turnover with a jumper from Shaw to even the score. Beverly blocked a shot by the Huskies which generated a fast break Millersville layup to regain the lead with 2:18 remaining in the third. The Marauders dissolved the Huskies lead and entered the final quarter holding a three-point edge over Bloomsburg.
  • In a thrilling fourth quarter, Bloomsburg tied the game 55-55 with under six minutes remaining and took a two-point lead off a jumper in the paint. Marin Miller drained a three-pointer to put the Marauders up by one-point with 1:30 left but the Huskies persisted and made a jumper to give the lead right back. With 0:42 seconds remaining, Shaw hit a clutch jump shot which gave Millersville all they needed to beat the Huskies. Bloomsburg attempted two last shots in the final seconds but missed both, giving Millersville the 60-59 win.

POST GAME THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH SHARAY HALL

  • On breaking the three-game losing streak: Todays win helps our momentum headed into second half of season. It's hard to get out of a losing streak but today we played as a team down the stretch which led to our win.
  • Capitalizing on Bloomsburg's turnovers: We are a defensive team, it's always a point of emphasis for us to create havoc and force turnovers. It's where we get a chance to put easy points on the board. Our second half push and pressure were a huge part of today's outcome.
  • On playing as a team: When we play as a team, we have the ability to pull out wins like this. It takes all 15 for us to be successful and today's stat sheet displayed that.

UP NEXT
