Millersville goes wire-to-wire for road win

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Millersville led wire-to-wire, fighting off every charge Lock Haven had in it for a 73-67 road win Saturday in Lock Haven. Matt Dade led the Marauders with 15 points and a career-high six assists, and Dylin Borden finished with six steals.

Dade and Drew Stover (11 points) were effective scoring in the post, and when Lock Haven turned its defensive attention to the interior, Millersville (9-8, 5-4 PSAC) took advantage of its open looks from three, sinking 8-of-16. Justin Nwosu finished with 12 points and eight rebounds, and he and freshman Day Waters led the team with two threes each. Nwosu and Waters hit threes on back-to-back possessions late in the second half to quell another Lock Haven run and keep their team in the lead.

Millersville has won back-to-back road games for the first time this season, and have won both by playing well in crunch time.

"The Gannon game was ugly but what it did was get us more confident," said Millersville head coach Casey Stitzel. "We played this game with more confidence from the tip. It's important for us to get off to a good start. (Lock Haven) made some runs in the second half, but we led for the whole game, got some big rebounds, made some big shots. Everyone who played was solid, contributed and gave good minutes."

Millersville led by eight at the half and by as many as 12 in the second. Stover's hook shot with 14 minutes remaining boosted Millersville's advantage to 44-32. Lock Haven would not go quietly, though. An 11-3 run led by seven Jayy Davis points cut Millersville's lead down to three. Jahme Ested answered with a drive for two, and Mekhi Hendricks drilled a three to push the lead right back to eight.

Another Davis 3-pointer with 6:55 to play cut Millersville's lead to two, but again, Millersville stayed in front with a left-handed drive from Dade and a 3-pointer from Waters. Eli Washington pulled Lock Haven to within three once more at 60-57 with 5:18 to play, but the Marauders forced back-to-back missed threes, and Nwosu hit a dagger for a six-point lead with four minutes left. Millersville held a two-possession lead the rest of the way.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Millersville has won five in a row over Lock Haven, allowing fewer than 70 points in each of the last three meetings.
• Stitzel earned his 200th career win Saturday with 84 of those wins coming at Millersville. He ranks sixth at Millersville in wins.
• Borden has nine steals in his last three games played. He played a career-high 25 minutes Saturday.
• Dade has scored double-digit points in four consecutive games while also averaging 3.5 assists per game.

 MORE FROM COACH CASEY STITZEL
On Borden's play in the last two games: "He's a high IQ kid. Been shooting the ball better, and he's pesky on defense. I thought he could help us defensively on their guards. He brings some leadership, and he's a big reason why we've won two road games in a row. He's been a spark. His attitude stayed great even when he wasn't playing as much, and I always believe that guys like that will make a difference when their number is called."
