Millersville propels over the Warriors with a 22-point win

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville women's basketball is back in the win column after picking up their ninth win of the season over East Stroudsburg. Millersville leaped to an early lead in the first quarter which gave them an edge the Warriors would never recover from. Millersville improves to 9-6 overall and 4-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) while the Warriors drop to 8-7 overall and 4-5 in the PSAC. 

Leading Millersville in scoring was La'Shyra Williams and Taylor Langan who tallied 13-points each. Marin Miller added 10-points for Millersville, marking her fifth consecutive game scoring double-digits while also leading the Marauders in assists with six. Bria Beverly made her third consecutive start scoring eight-points, grabbing three rebounds and making two steals. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Marauders were off to a hot start aftering piling an 11-0 lead over the Warriors, East Stroudsburg was scoreless until halfway through the first quarter. The Warriors were able to generate a 10-4 run on Millersville in less than two minutes to cut their deficit to five but the Marauders would tally nine additional points to outscore the Warriors 24-12 in the first quarter.
  • Millersville and East Stroudsburg scored 11-points each in the second, which allowed the Marauders to maintain their lead after the first quarter. East Stroudsburg was held to shooting 4-for-12 from the floor and 0-for-6 behind the arc. The Warriors would head into halftime trailing by 12-points after making two layups to close the second quarter.
  • Looking to close in on Millersville, East Stroudsburg would trail by single-digits for the first time since the opening quarter after a made free-throw and three-pointer put the Warriors within eight-points. The Marauders quickly jumped back to their double-digit lead and maintained a safe distance through the third. Millersville shot their best from the floor during the third quarter, going 6-for-12.
  • Millersville would secure the victory in the final quarter of action by generating a 11-2 run to push their lead to 22-points. The Marauders would create their biggest lead of the match-up from a free throw by Alyssa Rodriques to extend 24-points over East Stroudsburg. The Warriors made two free-throws to close regulation but would ultimately drop the conference game 67-45. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 

  • Millersville's defense would force 24 Warrior turnovers, which assisted the Marauders in scoring 20-points off turnovers.
  • 10 different Marauders contributed to the box score including Jabria Ingram, Morgan MahoneyMadison Grubb, and Rodriques.
  • Makiah Shaw led Millersville in rebounds with six. Langan and Brenna Orwein would grab five of their own.
  • The Marauders held the edge in points off turnovers (20-12), second chance points (13-10), bench points (23-18), points in the paint (40-28), and fast break points (10-6).

  • "I thought today was a great day. Our girls played hard and played together. It was great to have the opportunity to play with multiple people and stay consistent for 40 minutes on the floor."

UP NEXT 

  • The Marauders are back on the road for two away games next week. Millersville will face PSAC West foe Gannon on Jan. 18 at 5:30 p.m and PSAC East opponent Lock Haven on Jan. 21 at 1 p.m.
