Marauders drop match-up with Kutztown, falling 60-48

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Kutztown's three-point shooting in the third quarter lifted the Golden Bears past Millersville in Pucillo Gymnasium on Wednesday night. Holding a one-point edge after the half, Kutztown drained four consecutive three-pointers to create a nine-point distance from Millersville, which the Marauders would never recover from. The Golden Bears improve to 7-7 overall and 5-3 in the PSAC East and Millersville drops to 8-6 and 3-5 in the conference. 

Millersville shot 35.7% from the floor and made 8-of-13 free throws, with their best shooting coming from the first quarter going 8-for-14 in field goals. Millersville took 14 shots behind the arc, but Kutztown's defense held the Marauders in no made three-pointers. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The first two quarters consisted of tight action, with the furthest lead being from the Golden Bears after starting the game with a 6-0 run. Millersville quickly generated offensive momentum and took their first lead from a fast break layup by Bria Beverly. Kutztown held a one-point lead with under one minute in the first until a jumper from Taylor Langan gave Millersville the edge. The Golden Bears would nail a jump shot with 0:14 remaining to take the lead back.Quarter two was low scoring on both ends of the court, Millersville outscored Kutztown 8-6, shooting 26.67% from the floor. The Marauders held a one-point edge heading into halftime after two Kutztown free throws shortened the gap.
  • Kutztown opened the third quarter with a 12-3 run over Millersville, draining four consecutive three-pointers for a nine-point lead. The Marauders chipped away but couldn't come closer than five-points of the Golden Bears. Kutztown ended the third with a buzzer-beater three-pointer to lead Millersville 46-38.
  • The Marauders were outscored in the final quarter 14-10. Kutztown saw their largest lead of the night in the fourth with a 15-point margin. The Marauders would continue to fight but would ultimately fall to the Golden Bears with a 12-point deficit. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 

  • Beverly led the Marauders in scoring with 13-points, going 5-11 from the floor and 3-6 from the free throw line. Marin Miller tallied her fourth-straight game scoring double-digits with 10-points.
  • Brenna Ortwein and Langan both grabbed eight rebounds. Ortwein totaled nine-points from shooting 4-for-7 from the floor and making one foul shot. Langan added six points for Millersville and led the Marauders in assists with four.
  • Millersville held Kutztown to shooting 25% from the floor in the first quarter and making no three-pointers in the second.
  • Kutztown held the edge in points off turnovers (14-5), second chance points (4-3), and fast break points (12-8).  

UP NEXT 

  • The Marauders will look to bounce back on Saturday, Jan. 14 when the East Stroudsburg Warriors travel to Pucillo Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
