Millersville women's tennis readies for PSAC Tournament

| By:
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - After winning the PSAC East and securing a No. 1 seed, the Millersville women's tennis team starts its PSAC Tournament action in the semifinals against Slippery Rock Friday at 2 p.m. Both the semifinals and championship matches are held at Bloomsburg University.

Millersville posted a 7-0 division record and went 15-7 overall, scoring its most victories in a season since 2001. This group of Marauders are no stranger to the PSAC Tournament. Four of the starters were in the lineup in 2021 when the team advanced to the championship game before being forced to withdrawal due to COVID-19 protocols.

Head coach Matt Helsel has led the team to three-straight winning seasons and three-straight PSAC Tournament berths. Millersville's last PSAC Championship came in 2002. Millersville is plenty familiar with Friday's opponent, as well. Millersville and Slippery Rock played a dual less than one week ago, and Slippery Rock scored a 7-0 win.

Slippery Rock has quality players throughout its singles lineup as all six regular starters have winning records with at least 11 dual wins apiece. The top doubles team of Lois Page and Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez is 17-11. The key to success for Millersville has been its depth. Julie Wallace went undefeated in singles vs. the PSAC East, as did Kelsey Heckert. Chloe Abramowitz (No. 6) and Noelle Htwar (No. 3) lead the team with 15 wins. Wallace and Htwar have been an outsanding pairing at the top of the doubles lineup, posting a 16-11 overall record. Heckert has most often teamed with Jasmine Morris in doubles, and Heckert never lost a PSAC East doubles match in her career.

While Millersville is currently ranked No. 7 in the NCAA Atlantic Region rankings, right on the bubble, Slippery Rock is ranked No. 4 with a 14-6 record, finishing in second place in the PSAC West, losing only to top-seeded IUP. IUP plays West Chester in the other semifinal. IUP has won three of the last four conference championships. Slippery Rock's last title came in 2003.
