Millersville to meet Mercyhurst in PSAC Semifinals

| By:
BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The postseason begins Friday in Bloomsburg for the Millersville men's tennis team. The No. 3-seeded Marauders are set to square off against the second-seeded Mercyhurst Lakers in the PSAC Semifinals at 11 a.m.

The 9-7 Marauders went 4-2 in conference play while Mercyhurst won four of its five conference matches, including a 5-2 win over the Marauders on March 19. That match-up was far closer than the final score. Millersville won two of three matches in doubles, and three of Mercyhurst's singles victories came in three sets. Millersville's lone singles win came in the No. 1 flight from Carlos Martinez-Lucas who topped David Akinpetide, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. Martinez-Lucas is 2-0 vs. Akinpetide this season.

Millersville's nine wins are already its most in a season since 2011. This week, the Marauders ranked No. 8 in the NCAA Atlantic Region rankings, just on the outside looking in, as only the top six in the region make the NCAA Tournament field. The Marauders likely need a run to the PSAC Championship to qualify. Mercyhurst is ranked No. 4 in the region.

Millersville is led by its outstanding doubles team of Martinez-Lucas and Frank Yanni. The duo is 20-3 overall, 14-1 in duals and have already won the PSAC Doubles Championship this season. That win total ranks fourth all-time at Millersville, and the .869 winning percentage ranks fourth as well. Martinez-Lucas and Yanni were recently ranked No. 41 in the ITA Division II doubles rankings.

In singles action, Martinez-Lucas owns a 15-8 record on the season, and his career winning percentage is first among in Millersville history. Dylan Tull has been a nice addition to the club. From the No. 3 spot in the lineup, he's posted a team-best 17-6 record and rides a four-match winning streak into the postseason.

Mercyhurst won three-straight PSAC titles from 2017-2019. Millersville has not won a championship in the current tournament format, and the only other conference titles were won in 1960 and 1985.

Top-seeded Edinboro faces Bloomsburg on the other side of the bracket. The championship match is set for Saturday.
