Women's lacrosse earns playoff berth with victory over Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. – The Millersville women's lacrosse team clinched the final postseason berth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division today, taking down the Shepherd Rams 15-11 on the road. This marks the Marauders' first postseason appearance since the 2019 season. 'Ville will face either West Chester or East Stroudsburg in the PSAC Quarterfinals on Tuesday, May 3 on the road.

Gillian Zimmerman scored a team-high four goals, while firing a team-high seven shots, all landing on frame. The graduate student now has scored 135 goals in her five-year career at Millersville and ranks eighth all-time in program history. She is four goals behind Hannah Vogel ('15) for seventh all-time. In addition to her career achievements, Zimmerman is now tied for sixth all-time in single-season goals scored with 56 in 2022, four behind Bridget Hufnagel's 2016 season (60) for fifth. She's also tied for 10th all-time in single season points with 65 thus far into the year.

Amanda Juliano led the Marauders in assists with four, the senior now ranks second in single season assists with 33 and eighth in single season points with 70.

Morgan Scott recorded 15 saves in the win, bringing her record in net to 11-5 this season.

The Marauders improve to 11-5 overall and 7-4 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East play, while Kutztown falls to 4-11 and 2-9 in PSAC East play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • First-quarter action was all 'Ville, as five different Marauders were able to find the back of the Shepherd net to take a 5-2 lead through 15 minutes of play.
  • The Marauders continued to build their lead in the second quarter, as they outscored the Rams 5-4 to take a 10-6 lead before the half.
  • The two PSAC East foes played an even second half, each scoring five goals which gave the Marauders their second victory of Shepherd this season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Taiyana Goldsborough and Morgan Scott each recorded a team-high four ground balls.
• Keeney led the team in draw controls with 4, Cobaugh followed with three of her own.
• Millersville was 20-23 on clears, while Shepherd was 14-19.
• Millersville committed 22 turnovers, while Shepherd committed 21.  
• The Marauders recorded more ground balls than the Rams, 21-19.

• On the team's play today: "The team worked together to fight for a full 60 minutes and get the conference win."

UP NEXT
• The 2022 Marauders have a chance to win 12 games on Saturday when they face Shippensburg at home, a height that hasn't been reached in the program since 1990 when Millersville finished with 13 wins. If accomplished, they would join the teams from 1989 and 1990 as the only to win 12 or more in a season.
