ABOUT THE GAME

  • The Marauders have won five of their last eight after starting the season 1-14 and they'll face possibly their toughest test yet, as the current top team in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East comes to Pucillo Gymnasium Wednesday night, No. 21 Kutztown. The nationally ranked Golden Bears are 13-1 in their last 14 games and have won their last four contests by 14 or more points. While Kutztown looks to be a lock in the PSAC tournament, the Marauders are still fighting for a spot and currently are on the wrong side of a tiebreaker with Lock Haven for the six seed. They'll look to add to their postseason chances with a possible upset Wednesday night.
This week is a crucial week for our team if we still want a chance at the postseason. Therefore, we are focused on taking one game at a time and continuing to grow together.
Head Coach Sharay Hall

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS

  • Millersville continues to show up on the defensive end of the floor, which allows the team to produce offense off fast break opportunities and opposing teams' turnovers. The Marauders force the second most turnovers in the PSAC at 21.7 per game, a majority of those forced turnovers come from veteran guards, Lauren Lister and Ty Taylor, who each average over 1.7 steals per game.
  • The offense comes primarily from Millersville's all-time leading scorer, Lister. The guard averages a team-high 14 points per game and has reached double-figures in nine of the last 10 games. She has been receiving assistance from freshman forward, Makiah Shaw. Shaw has scored in double-digits in two of the last three games, which account for more than half of her double-figure scoring games this season. Redshirt senior, Mia Leonard has also started to get going on the offensive end, reaching double-digits in the last two games.
  • The Marauders have been doing a very good job at getting to the free throw line this season, ranking third in the PSAC in free throw attempts at 391. As a team, they've made more than 10 free throws in each of their final four contests.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN BEARS

  • Kutztown comes into Wednesday's matchup with a 14-4 conference record, and a PSAC East best defense, holding opponents to under 54 points per game. The Golden Bears most impressive performance arguably came on Jan. 22 in a 63-47 victory over the top scoring team in the PSAC, Shepherd. Shepherd averages around 70 points per game and was held to just 47 by the Kutztown defense. Since that game, the Golden Bears haven't allowed a team to score over 46, and held East Stroudsburg to 36 last week.
  • The Kutztown starting five disrupts opposing teams by using their length, as each of their five starters are 5'10" or taller. This has allowed them to lead the PSAC in blocks with 149 on the season, the next closest team is Cal U with 68.
  • The Golden Bears are led by guard-forward combo Rylee Derr and Casey Remolde on the offensive end of the floor. Derr averages a team-high 14.1 points per game, while Remolde sits at 11.3 with a team-high 8.1 rebounds per game.

THE LAST TIME OUT

Millersville: Shippensburg 75, Millersville 57 (Feb. 7, 2022) - Millersville women's basketball saw it three-game winning streak end in its last game out against Shippensburg. The Raiders took a late second-quarter lead and held onto it throughout the game. Lauren Lister scored a team-high 21 points, while Makiah Shaw and Mia Leonard each scored 10.

Kutztown:  Kutztown 60, Lock Haven 46 (Feb. 5, 2022) -  The game was close throughout the first half with the Golden Bears holding just a six point lead after two quarters played. However, that changed in the third when Kutztown erupted for 20 points in the quarter and rolled to a double-digit victory.

THE LAST MEETING

  • Millersville 63, Kutztown 69 (Feb. 6, 2022) - Mia Leonard scored a career-high 26 points off 13-26 shooting from the field, but it wasn't enough to take down a Kutztown team that outscored the Marauders by 10 in the second quarter.
