ABOUT THE GAME

  • After playing just two conference matches this season, the Millersville women’s basketball team will begin the bulk of their PSAC play on Sunday and Monday afternoon against two West opponents. The Marauders are on the road to face Clarion on Sunday and Pitt-Johnstown on Monday. Millersville’s record moves to 6-2 after defeating the University of the District of Columbia on Wednesday night. The only two PSAC opponents the Marauders faced this season were Edinboro and Mercyhurst. Millersville clinched the win over Edinboro but dropped the contest against Mercyhurst. Tip-off for both matches is set for 1 p.m. 

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS

  • In Millersville’s latest game against UDC, offensive leader Taylor Langan recorded 18-points, marking her sixth game this season scoring double-digits. Sophomore guard, Bria Beverly, tallied her season-high of 10-points and four field goals made. Marin Miller has provided impressive play for the Marauders in her first season in the black-and-gold. Miller is the team's second-leading scorer, averaging 10.3 points per game. Co-captain, Brenna Ortwein, is a crucial piece for Millersville. She averages 2.9 steals and 5.1 rebounds per contest. Ortwein is also shooting .564 from the floor and .429 from behind the arc.  

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES

  • Clarion will be looking for their first win of the season against Millersville on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles have dropped all seven contests this season, including two PSAC games. Clarion’s offense is led by Sierra Bermudez and Jada Smith who both average 10.4 points per game. Bermudez dishes out at least two assists per game and Smith averages 2.6 steals per game. 

SCOUTING THE MOUNTAIN CATS

  • Pitt-Johnstown will face West Chester on Sunday afternoon before playing Millersville on Monday. The Mountain Cats are currently 4-4 overall and 1-1 in PSAC play, beating Bloomsburg on Dec. 2 and falling to East Stroudsburg on Dec. 3. Pitt-Johnstown has dropped their last three games, with their most recent loss coming from defending National Champions, Glenville State, with a score of 62-79. The Moutain Cats are led by Senior Ashley Norling who averages 14.3 points and seven rebounds per game. Norling is also shooting .553 from the floor. Peyton Alazaus is also contributing offensively for Pitt-Johnstown, averaging 12.6 points per contest. 

THE LAST TIME OUT

  • Millersville: Millersville 68, UDC 52 (Dec. 14, 2022) - The Firebirds led almost all of quarter one, shooting their best of 43.75% from the floor and 25% from behind the arc. UDC couldn't maintain a lead further than three-points, which was short enough for Millersville to recover from by the end of the first. The Firebirds tallied seven-points in the opening minutes of the third quarter to trail the Marauders 35-34. Millersville answered with a 10-point run which extended their lead over UDC by 10-points. With under four minutes remaining in regulation, Millersville went on a 13-2 run which gave them their largest lead of the night. The Firebirds were able to cut the deficit, but it wasn't enough, and Millersville clinched their sixth win of the season by a score of 68-52.
  • Clarion: Frostburg State 56, Clarion 44 (Dec. 14, 2022) - The Golden Eagles fell to Frostburg State by a 56-44 score. Clarion outscored Frostburg State in the first and fourth quarters and remained within a point of them in the third. However,  Frostburg State outscored Clarion 31-9 in the second 10-minute stretch of the game. Jada Smith led the team in scoring and rebounding, Smith totaled nine points and grabbed 14 rebounds.
  • Pitt-Johnstown: Glenville St. 79, Pitt-Johnstown 62 (Dec. 13, 2022) - The Mountain Cats faced the defending Division II National Champions of Glenville State, who rallied for a late comeback to beat Pitt-Johnstown 79-62 in a non-conference matchup. Ashley Norling led the Mountain Cats with a double-double, totaling 15-points and 12 rebounds. Peyton Alazaus totaled 13-points which included three-3 pointers.

SERIES HISTORY VS. CLARION

Millersville leads the all-time series 13-9 over Clarion. The Marauders are 5-6 at home versus the Golden Eagles but are 6-2 in away matches. Clarion won the last meeting against Millersville, defeating the Marauders 53-34.  

  • The Last Meeting vs. Clarion – Clarion 53, Millersville 34 (Dec. 3, 2021) - Millersville hung in early, keeping the game within striking distance at the end of one, with the scoring sitting at 12-6; However, Clarion would find a rhythm in the second quarter and didn't look back, leading to an eventual victory for the Golden Eagles. Jada Smith had a near 20-20 game, finishing with 19 points to go along with 18 rebounds in 35 minutes for Clarion. Christina Brown and Alyssa Rodriques each scored six points off the bench for Sharay Hall and the Marauders.

 

SERIES HISTORY VS. PITT-JOHNSTOWN

Pitt-Johnstown leads the all-time series 7-17 and is currently on a three game win streak against Millersville. The Marauders are even with the Mountain Cats at home with a 5-5 record. Millersville struggles on the road against the Mountain Cats, winning one out of eleven away matches. Pitt-Johnstown won the last meeting against Millersville, defeating the Marauders 63-56.  

  • The Last Meeting vs. Pitt-Johnstown– Pitt-Johnstown 63, Millersville 56 (Dec. 4, 2021) - The Marauders played their best basketball in the first quarter, outscoring the Mountain Cats 18-11 over the first ten minutes of action. Johnstown would win the scoring battle in the remaining three quarters. With the game tied at 11-11, 'Ville was able to go on a seven-point run to close the first quarter, which would be the best run of the day. The Mountain Cats were able to close the gap in the second quarter, cutting the Marauder lead to just three points at the end of the first half. The third quarter made the difference, with Johnstown outscoring Millersville 18-12 and taking the lead for good.
