MATCH PREVIEW

  • Millersville is off to a 2-0 start in PSAC Eastern Division play, but the Marauders host a PSAC crossover against Edinboro and Atlantic Region's No. 6-ranked Mercyhurst on Friday and Saturday. The non-conference matches will serve as a final tune-up for the stretch run that includes four PSAC East matches from April 16-21.
  • Millersville has four matches played but has yet to play on its home court. Friday's match with Mercyhurst is the official home opener at McComsey Tennis Courts and starts a stretch that includes six of seven matches at home.
  • Millersville faced off against a regionally-ranked Salem team in its last match. Salem, ranked No. 7, won the match 4-2, and Millersville's lone points came from forfeits at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
  •  The Marauders have had to shuffle the lineup this spring, and Jasmine Morris was bumped to No. 1 singles after playing primarily in the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 spots last season. She won her first match and two of her last three matches have been closely-contested. Julia Wallace is unbeaten (2-0) in conference play at No. 2 singles. Freshman Noelle Htwar has been a pleasant surprise, playing at No. 3 singles and winning both of her PSAC East match. Maria Ojeda is 2-1 at No. 4 singles and was leading in her match vs. Salem when it was called. Lauren Weaver is also 2-0 in PSAC East play at No. 6 singles.
  • Millersville has fared well in doubles, posting a 7-4 overall record and a 6-0 mark against PSAC East teams. Wallace and Htwar have teamed for a strong 3-1 record.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

  • Mercyhurst is 3-5 but it has played a challenging schedule that includes three losses to Division I teams and two to teams ranked in the top three of the region. Mercyhurst is coming off of a 5-2 win over Seton Hill and has won three of four, including a 4-3 win over Fairmont State, which is the region's No. 9-ranked team. Mercyhurst's strength is in the back-half of its lineup. Valentine Budin is 5-2 in spots No. 4-No. 6. Alana Lewis is 3-1 at No. 5 singles, and Janice Theodora is 3-0 at No. 6 singles. The most successful doubles team is Valentine and Theodora, which owns a 4-0 record at No. 3 doubles.
  • Edinboro is 2-6 and has played six of its matches at home. Like Millersville, Edinboro dropped a dual to Salem. Salem lost that dual 4-3, earning points from forfeits at No. 5 and No. 6 singles and a win at No. 1 singles by Kaede Tada. Tada has been Edinboro's standout player, going 5-3 as the team's No. 1. The No. 3 doubles team of Emily Cevera and Lauren Chiacchia is also 4-1.
The PSAC West has a lot of very good teas, so getting a chance to play them really helps as we finish our East schedule. Both Edinboro and Mercyhurst are playing well so it'll be a great way to gauge where we are and see what we may need to fine-tune as we approach the season's final stretch.
Matt Helsel, Millersville Head Coach

SERIES HISTORY

  • Millersville and Mercyhurst don't have a long history--the series dates back to 2010--but the teams have met six times with Mercyhurst winning each match-up. The last four matches have been played with Millersville as the home team, including three at McComsey Tennis Courts. Four of Mercyhurst's wins have come by a 9-0 margin. It's been five years since the teams last met, and no player on Millersville's current roster has faced Mercyhurst previously.
  • Millersville and Edinboro have played just eight times since the first meeting in 1987 and just twice in the last 26 years. The last two matches were played at Millersville. Millersville's last win over Edinboro came in 1995.
