SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Hannah Woelfling hit a NCAA Championships provisional mark in the discus and also won the hammer throw, highlighting the Millersville University track and field team's performances at Saturday's Paul Kaiser Classic.
Woelfling's toss of 149-8 in the discus was nearly nine feet further than her previous PR. Woelfling's winning distance in the hammer throw was 175-11. Woelfling and teammate Aliyah Striver have traded top finishes all season, and Striver was right behind Woelfling in both events on Saturday, placing second in the hammer (165-8), and third in the discus (134-1). Striver also placed second in the shot put with a heave of 44-4.
On the track, Aurora Conrad, Emma Elwell both ran PR times in the prelims of the 100-meter dash. Conrad posted a 12.38 for the sixth-best qualifying time, and Elwell also qualified for the finals with a time of 12.53. Neither runner competed in the finals. Gabriella Karch ran a season-best time of 12.78.
Conrad also turned in a time of 26.08 in the 200-meter dash, landing her a fifth-place finish.
Three Marauders finished in the top eight in the 400-meter dash. Lyric Williams's PR of 59.32 placed her sixth. Amanda Bruno also cracked 1:00 for the first time in her career, placing seventh with a time of 59.64. Mia Carson also ran a PR of 1:00.15 for an eighth-place finish. The team of Williams, Bruno, Conrad and Carson finished third (4:00.59) out of 13 teams in the 400-meter dash.
Skylar Maurer ran a personal-best time of 5:11.85 to place eighth in the 1,500-meter run. Hannah Sweda dropped her best time by eight seconds, running a 5:17.79 for 10th place.
REACTION FROM COACH ANDY YOUNG
"We had lots of PRs today before the weather started to turn windy and cooler. The 100 and 400 looked strong for us. Hannah had a day. That discus bomb was huge."
NOTES
• Woelfling now has NCAA "B" qualifying marks in both the discus and hammer throw. Saturday marked the second time that she has won two events at the same meet.
• Conrad has lowered her 100 PR three times in five meets.
UP NEXT
• Millersville will compete at the Lock Haven Invitational on April 30 and May 1 for its final tune-up for the PSAC Championships.
