ABOUT THE MEET
- After a year hiatus because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Millersville Metrics returns for its 38th edition on Saturday at Biemesderfer Stadium. The meet is an early-season tradition at Millersville, and this year, six PSAC schools join the competition.
- Action begins at 9:30 a.m., with a men/women combined 10,000-meter run. Field events start with the long jump, triple jump, pole vault, hammer throw and shot put at 10:15 a.m. Team scoring is held, and East Stroudsburg is the defending women's champ, scoring 161.5 points to Millersville's 143 in 2019. East Stroudsburg also won the 2019 men's team title with 162 over Georgian Court's 115. Millersville (women) and Messiah (men) won the team titles in 2018. Team scores started being counted in 2013, and since then, Millersville has won the women's title three times and has never finished lower than second.
- While usually more than 20 schools would be represented at the Millersville Metrics, health and safety guidelines have limited the number of participants. This year, competing teams include Millersville, East Stroudsburg, Shippensburg, Bloomsburg, Kutztown and Lock Haven.
- Several former Metrics event winners will have a chance to defend their titles. Bloomsburg's Kathleen Stevenson won the long jump in 2019 (18-6). East Stroudsburg's Tiana Webster is the defending champ in the 100-meter dash (12.47). On the men's side, ESU's Dan Amari won the 2019 pole vault (14-7 1/4), and Dominic Walton won the shot put (53-7 3/4).
- Since 2013, a Millersville athlete has won the hammer throw in six of seven meets. A Marauder has won at least two of the four throwing events in the last three Metrics. Millersville has also had similar success in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash, winning both four times since 2015.
- Millersville's throwers got their 2021 seasons off to fast starts last week at the Millersville Little Meet. Aliyah Striver and Hannah Woefling both hit NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the hammer throw. Striver's 180-8 is the fourth-best in the country while Woefling's 179-8 ranks sixth. It was Woefling's first career outdoor event. Striver also hit a “B cut” in the discus at 151-7. She currently ranks 12th nationally.
- Sophomore Aurora Conrad won the 100 and 200 last week. Her 100 time of 12.69 ranks fifth among PSAC athletes. Her 200 time of 25.62 also ranks fifth in the conference.
We really enjoyed the home atmosphere. I feel like the team gets up for home meets more than anything else.Andy Young, Millersville Head Coach
