LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - It started as an already abbreviated season, but Millersville women's cross country never got the chance to run at full strength in 2021. Short-handed at Saturday's PSAC Championships in Lock Haven, Millersville placed 14th in a field of 15 teams.
It was Millersville's lone race of the 2021 spring season. The one warm-up meet was previously postponed, and Millersville ran without 2019 All-PSAC performer Yoangelys Rijo-Cedeno and sophomore Abbey Sullivan. Instead, freshman Morgan Janiuk was the team's top finisher, placing 41st with a time of 20:03.6 in her first collegiate race. The race was a 5K distance as opposed to the usual 6K championship distance.
Jillian Miller ran second for Millersville, placing 68th in 20:49.3. Skylar Maurer came in 68th with a time of 21:23.8. Kaycee McCullough took 96th with a time of 21:46.4. Senior Alexa Happ came in 104th with a time of 22:03.3. Hannah Sweda ran a 23:38.3 for 134th and Brianna Brennan finished three spots later in 23:53.3. There were 149 total runners in the 15-team field.
Edinboro won the team championship with 58 points, finishing ahead of host Lock Haven, who totaled 83. Edinboro's Stefanie Parsons won the race with a time of 17:31.8, nearly 14 seconds in front of Lock Haven's Laurel Moyer. Three Edinboro runners finished in the top four.
REACTION FROM COACH ANDY YOUNG
• On the Morgan Janiuk's race "Morgan had a really solid race. She has been running well in practice recently, and we were excited to see her run one of her better times of her career."
• On how to translate cross country training to the track and field season: "This was our rust-buster race. Unfortunately, it was also a championship race. I thought the women ran solid despite not racing in a very long time. We expect that as we progress to track season that we will continue to get better and hopefully get back more of our athletes who were missed today. This group is more middle distance-oriented so theya re excited to get back on the track."
NOTES
• This was the first PSAC Cross Country Championship ever held in the spring semester.
• Millersville's track and field season begins on Saturday, March 27 with the Millersville Little Meet at Biemesderfer Stadium.
