Box Score BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - For the first time in more than a decade, the best doubles team in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) is from Millersville University. The pairing of
Frank Yanni and
Carlos Martinez-Lucas rallied from a 4-1 deficit in Sunday's championship match to become just the second Millersville team to win the conference's doubles title.
Sandwiched around his doubles match, Martinez-Lucas played two singles matches Sunday, first winning in the semifinals before falling in the championship to Edinboro's Bruno Sabio. He became just the second Marauder to reach the finals of the PSAC Individual Championships and the first since 2014.
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
• Yanni and Martinez-Lucas, now 18-4 when paired together all-time, made quick work of their first round and semifinal opponents earlier in the weekend, winning both matches by 8-1 scores. Edinboro's Sabio and Rocco Palombarini, who upset the bracket's No. 1 seed in the first round, awaited the Marauder duo in the finals Sunday.
• Edinboro started quickly, racing to a 4-1 lead before Yanni and Martinez-Lucas reversed the course of the match and won seven of the 12 games for an 8-6 triumph. The pairing clinched the title when the return volley off of Martinez-Lucas' serve sailed long. The only other Marauder team to win a PSAC doubles title was Preetham Moras and Drew Slocum in 2010.
• In singles, Martinez-Lucas made the deepest run by a Millersville player since Jody Sambrick Jr. reached the finals in 2014. It was Martinez-Lucas' second appearance in the championships after bowing in the second round in 2019.
• After two straight-set wins earlier in the weekend, Martinez-Lucas was pushed by Mercyhurst's David Akinpetide in the semis early Sunday, but Millersville's top player prevailed in a barn burner, 6-7 (5), 6-4 (10-7). Not long after his triumph over Sabio's team in doubles, the two dueled for the singles title where Sabio won his first PSAC singles title 6-3, 6-4. An Edinboro player has now won five of the last six singles titles.
REACTION FROM COACH MATT HELSEL
•
On the doubles championship victory: "I'm so proud of Carlos and Frank. They were down 4-1 but never stopped problem-solving and believing they could do it. They stood their ground, made some adjustments, and relied on their experience and trust in each other. An outstanding performance."
•
On Martinez-Lucas' singles performance: "Carlos is a tremendous competitor and leader. It was fitting for him to be the last one still playing this weekend. He played so well all weekend and has a lot to show for it. We are looking forward to playing head-to-head matches and can't wait for the spring conference season."
•
On how the team benefited from the tournament: "These tournaments have been valuable experience for our new players to gel with returners, for us to work out our doubles tandems and figure out our lineup. It's been a lot of tennis, but we're a better team that we were a month ago."
