
Millersville hall of famer Charlie Parker coaches team to finals of The Basketball Tournament

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - It's being called a Cinderella run, and the coach behind it is Millersville alum and hall of fame member Charlie Parker '09. Parker's team, Sideline Cancer, won its semifinal game of The Basketball Tournament in thrilling fashion Sunday night and will now play for a $1 million prize on July 14 at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
Parker's Sideline Cancer team has participated in the tournament each year since the tournament started in 2014. Parker previously played for the team and is now the head coach. It is one of 24 teams to qualify for the field. The team is part of the Griffith Family Foundation, and according to the team's website, it is a member of the World Pancreatic Cancer Coalition, spreading awareness with hopes of finding a cure for pancreatic cancer.
Sideline Cancer entered the tournament as the No. 22 seed and knocked off the No. 2-seeded Overseas Elite in the semifinals. The team awaiting in the finals is the Golden Eagles, a team comprised of Marquette basketball alums.
Parker remains a basketball instructor in the local area and served as an assistant coach at Millersville after an outstanding professional and collegiate career. As a pro, he played for the Los Angeles D-Fenders in the NBA D-League and several years as a standout in Europe. With Millersville, Parker was a two-time PSAC East Athlete of the Year, leading Millersville to back-to-back NCA Atlantic Regional finals and a PSAC Championship. He scored 1,949 career points and ranks fourth all-time in assists and second all-time in steals.
