THOUGHTS FROM COACH BRIAN SMITH
• Thoughts on the match: "It was one of the sloppiest matches I've seen in a long time. We played flat and didn't perform. Our passing was not great. I don't think Cal played up to their abilities either. It was the PSAC opener so both teams were tight. The matches matter now. The stakes are higher.
• On what happened in the fourth and fifth sets: "We didn't close. Some of our players were playing too safe, not playing aggressive with the serve. The last two points they hit balls that went off our block. We are disappointed. They aced us and that shouldn't happen. We had some blocking errors. We should never have that many serve receive errors. We shouldn't be in that position. We are a better team than that. We shouldn't be fighting for points at the end of the set. We have to be able to put teams away late."
• On learning from the loss: "It's a tough loss. At least in the PSAC, we pick up one point with a fifth-set loss. Look, I know we are a good team. Cal is a team made the NCAA's last year. But we know when we play well and when we don't. We felt like we didn't play to our potential. We are going to learn from this and go play one of the best teams in the PSAC tomorrow. It's a character check early in the season. It's really about the quality of performance more so than the wins and losses. Tonight, we know we didn't have a quality performance."
