INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Millersville University's Sunflower Greene was announced as a nominee for the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year Award, an award presented annually to graduating female athletes who have distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.
Greene was one of a record 585 athletes nominated by NCAA member schools. The full list of nominees competed in 23 different sports across all three NCAA Divisions, including 262 from Division I, 131 from Division II and 192 from Division III.
Conferences will now select up to two nominees each from the pool of school nominees. The Woman of the Year Award selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will choose the top 30 honorees--10 from each division. The selection committee will determine the top three honorees from each division and announce the nine finalists in September. The top 30 honorees will be celebrated and the award winner will be named at the annual award ceremony on Oct. 20 in Indianapolis.
Greene graduated as one of the most accomplished athletes in PSAC history. She won back-to-back NCAA Division II Indoor Championships in the shot put, won 11 PSAC championships in five different events and was a five-time PSAC Field Athlete of the Year. Greene completed her athletic career with PSAC records in four events. She posted a 3.05 GPA as a business administration major.
Outside of competition, Greene served as vice president for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), playing an integral role in the group raising more than $5,000 each year for Make-A-Wish in addition to hosting on-campus wish reveals. Greene also volunteered time with Girls on the Run and served in a leadership position for the Cy Fritz Foundation, which raises funds for the track and field program. In 2019, she served as the keynote speaker for the student-athlete banquet at her high school, Conestoga Valley.
