WILMINGTON, Del. – The Millersville University softball team earned two shutout victories over the Goldey-Beacom Lightning starting the day with a 6-0 win and then ended it with a 9-0 triumph in game two.
Rebecca Blatt and
Brianna Battavio hit one home run each today.
Millersville improved to 18-21 while the Lightning fell to 8-20. Game two was the first time in 2019 that the Marauders allowed only one hit in a single game.
Blatt and
Maggie Murphy went 4-for-8 each.
Catherine Johnson pitched four innings in game two and only allowed one hit, improving her pitching record to 9-7.
GAME 1 RECAP (MILLERSVILLE 6, GOLDEY-BEACOM 0)
• The Marauders did not waste time scoring in the first inning, first on a two-run single by
Allie Janowiak. Blatt kept the offense going in the top of the second with a three-run home run which produced a 5-0 cushion for the squad.
• Two innings later,
Brianna Battavio stole second while Blatt, at third, saw an opening in the defense and ran home to score.
• Blatt finished the game with three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Murphy got two hits in the game which added to the Millersville's 11 total hits.
•
Emma Bevard allowed two hits through three innings.
Paige Harris relieved Bevard in the bottom of the fourth and kept the shutout going while pitching in the final four innings, totaling three strikeouts and two hits allowed.
GAME 2 RECAP (MILLERSVILLE 9, GOLDEY-BEACOM 0)
• The Marauders jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage in the top of the first inning. Millersville added to its lead with two straight RBI singles by
Faith Willenbrock and
Brianna White which scored two. In the next at-bat, Murphy drew a walk, loading the bases. Johnson ripped a line drive down the left field line, scoring two. Johnson's hit gave the Marauders a 7-0 lead.
• On the opposite side, Johnson had a no-hitter through the first three innings. The only hit the Marauders allowed came in the fourth.
• Battavio blasted a one-run home run in the top of the third which opened the Marauders to a 8-0 lead. In the next inning, Johnson kept the bats hot by hitting a one-run double to left field.
• Not only did Johnson allw one hit through four innings and struck out two batters, she also went 3-for-3 at the plate, adding a team-high four RBIs and a double.
Maddie Guinane finished out the game on the mound.
• Willenbrock and Murphy recorded two hits each.

NOTES
• The Marauders and Lightning met at the SnowBird Freeze-Off Tournament where Millersville won 8-4.
• Blatt recorded her first game of the year with three hits.
• The last doubleheader sweep that went to the Marauders was against Mansfield on March 23. After today's shutouts, the Marauders are 10-3 when they have scored in the first inning of the game.
• Battavio has reached base in the previous 13 straight games.
