Women's lacrosse offense struggles in the second half, loses to Mercyhurst, 10-7

Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville University women's lacrosse team trailed by only one at halftime, but the offense managed to score just three goals in the second half as the Marauders lost to Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon on Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.

Millersville, (7-6, 5-3 PSAC) has lost three-straight games, while the Lakers (8-5, 5-3 PSAC) have now won four straight.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• The two teams played a low scoring half to open the game and were tied, 4-4, with just under three minutes left before halftime. Paige Cocina broke the tie with a goal at the 1:35 mark to give Mercyhurst a lead it would ultimately not surrender.
• Neither team scored 10 minutes into the second half until Payton Cook doubled the Laker lead thanks to an assist from Brenna Fosco. Grace Cobaugh responded just over 30 seconds later with her second goal of the game to cut the deficit to one.
• Mercyhurst then rattled off four-straight draw controls and four-subsequent goals, the first two coming from the PSAC's leading scorer Emma Hubert, to give the Lakers a five-goal cushion. The Marauders didn't allow another goal after the 12:40 mark and goals from MaryCait Dorley and Sarah Leverentz made it a three-goal game, but it was too little too late as Mercyhurst held on for the win.

COACH CINDY WILSON QUOTES
• "Mercyhurst showed up toady and was ready to win. There is a lot of things we need to take away from this and learn from going forward for the rest of our PSAC games."
• "Everybody has a role on the team. When we show up and play our roles things go well, but sometimes we have lapses and momentum swings happen. Mercyhurst did a great job of managing that today, and we did not do as well with it. Going forward we need to learn to stay in the moment and control what we can control to get that momentum back in our favor."
• "The offense woke up towards the end, but by then we had dug a hole earlier that we couldn't get out of. It's good that we woke up by the end and hopefully we can keep that going for Tuesday's game, but we have to come out strong for a full 60 minutes."
• "We're still in a good position and still have a very good shot at playoffs. We just have to get our heads back in the right place and move forward. It's a matter of learning from today and using those productive lessons for Tuesday's game."

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
• Genevieve Speights led the attack with three goals and Grace Cobaugh wasn't far behind with two. Sara Burney assisted Speights' first two goals, while MaryCait Dorley scooped up a career-high six ground balls. Sarah Leverentz tied with Nathalie Sell for the game lead in caused turnovers (2) and with Speights for the game lead in draw controls (4).
• Shannon Davis made eight stops in net, including all three of the Lakers' free-position shots.

NOTES
• Mercyhurst had an advantage in shots (30-26), shots on goal (18-16), saves (9-8), ground balls (25-17) and turned the ball over 13 times compared to Millersville's 14 turnovers. The Marauders held an edge in clears (23-22), draw controls (10-9) and free-position shots (5-3).
• This marks the fewest goals Millersville has scored against the Lakers since the 2013 season.
• Mercyhurst has now won 12-straight games against the Marauders.

UP NEXT
• Millersville will conclude a string of three-straight home games when it hosts Kutztown on Tuesday, April 16 at 4 p.m. on Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
