Marauders earn first two victories of season at Messiah Duals

| By:
GRANTHAM, Pa. – Messiah College's Brubaker Auditorium became a hotbed of collegiate wrestling on Saturday afternoon as four wrestling programs from all across the NCAA came together to compete in six total dual meets. The Millersville Marauders wrestled duals against Division I Lock Haven, Division III McDaniel and No. 17 in Division III Messiah.

The Marauders' day began with a 41-6 loss to the Lock Haven Bald Eagles but the team quickly regrouped to face the Messiah Falcons. Ryan McGuire picked up his fifth straight win at 141 pounds and Jackson Erb exploded in the third period with a takedown into a cradle to earn a fall at 149 pounds. 165-pounder Jarrett Feeney used a great second period to secure a 6-0 decision but Messiah fought back to take an 18-12 lead in the team score with just two matches to go.

Josh Walls came up clutch at 285 pounds, using multiple tilts to tech fall his opponent and bring Millersville within just a point, 18-17. 125-pounder Devin Flannery was dominant in the final match, earning a 13-0 major decision and securing the 21-18 comeback victory for the Marauders. It was the program's first dual meet win of the 2019-2020 season.

That win total would quickly be doubled, as the Black and Gold also defeated McDaniel College 37-14 in the final dual of the evening.

DUAL MEET HIGHLIGHTS VS. MESSIAH COLLEGE
• 141-pounder Ryan McGuire wrestled a deliberate pace and patiently picked his spots in the first period. He transitioned from an underhook to a takedown near the edge of the circle late in the first period to make it a 2-0 lead. Those would be all the points McGuire would need as the sophomore held on for the 2-1 decision.
• The Marauders kept the momentum going at 149 pounds. Freshman Jackson Erb scored with a single leg shot early an added an escape to make it 3-0 after two periods. Looking for bonus points in the third period, he shot on an inside single that led directly into a cradle and a fall. The victory fired up Erb and the Millersville bench and gave the Marauders a 9-5 advantage in the team score.
• The Ville's next victory came at 165 pounds courtesy of Jarrett Feeney. After a scoreless first period, the freshman quickly escaped for a point then body locked his opponent, took him down, and exposed his back for two seconds to take a 5-0 lead. A riding time point made it a 6-0 decision.
• Millersville found itself down 18-12 with just two matches left to wrestle. At 285 pounds Josh Walls sparked the comeback with an aggressive approach, converting a first-period takedown into a tilt with short time remaining. He took a 6-0 lead into the second period and continued to use the tilt to pick up points in bunches, earning the 16-1 technical fall and closing the gap in the team score to just a point, 18-7.
• 125-pounder Devin Flannery needed to win his match to secure the dual meet victory. With the pressure on, the freshman delivered a quick takedown and two additional near fall points in the first period. A reversal in the second period made it 6-0 Flannery, and an ankle pick led to another takedown and four near-fall points in the third period. Flannery secured the 13-0 major decision and gave the Marauders their first dual meet win of the season.

POST-DUAL REACTION FROM HEAD COACH KERRY REGNER
• On takeaways from today: "We know who we are and who our opponents are and we accomplished our goals today. We had some bright spots and like always some stuff we still need to work on. We came here with a goal in mind and we did what we set out to do."

• On battling through adversity in the dual vs. Messiah: "We had guys like Jackson Erb picking up a late pin or Jarrett Feeney gritting through aches and pains and a bump in the road, then he puts up five points after that. When you have guys wrestle through non-ideal situations, that's what we're looking for. We want guys who are not afraid to wrestle when the situation is not perfect, because that's what life is and that's what wrestling is."

• On other key performances: "We had a couple of results even against Lock Haven; Eli Tuckey wrestled his heart out, and Jarrett Feeney was leading and makes a freshman mistake and gets caught. Caleb Warner knocks off a Division I guy. If you keep fighting and keep doing the right things, we'll give you a chance to get out there and show your stuff."
