Women's volleyball wins fourth in a row

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - After earning perhaps its most important win of the season Friday, there was no let-up for the Millersville women's volleyball team on Saturday. Just 16 hours after winning on the road at East Stroudsburg, the Marauders rolled at Kutztown, 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-19).

The win was Millersville's fourth in a row and eighth in the last nine matches and with three regular season matches remaining, the Marauders are assured a second consecutive trip to the PSAC Tournament. The Marauders improved to 22-7 (12-4 PSAC) with the win.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• Millersville totaled 40 kills to Kutztown's 27 and out-hit the home team .223 to .046. The Marauders also totaled nine aces while not allowing a single ace.
Jayci Suseland and Haley Butler were sharp. Suseland recorded 15 kills to one error for a .560 hitting percentage. Butler hit .458 with 12 kills and one error. Katie Laughman provided 32 helpers.
• Millersville piled up 28 kills in the first two sets and hit .294 or better in each of the first two as well. Millersville never trailed in sets one and two.
• Kutztown opened the third with a 3-1 lead, but three consecutive Kutztown errors put Millersville on top for good. It was still a tightly-contested set at 13-10, but Millersville scored five of the next six points to pull away.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Five Marauders recorded at least one ace. Rebecca Dalstad led with three. Laughman and Chyna Gubbings recorded two each.
• Five Marauders also totaled eight or more digs. Kat Forry led with 11. Dalstad and Emily Hoffman added nine each. Carley Baughman and Suseland led the team with three block assists.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH BRIAN SMITH
On not taking the match lightly: "I wasn't worried about that. We knew these quick turnarounds would happen with the schedule. We've been preaching to not take any game lightly. We reinforced it. They passed really well, handled the ball control. Any coach is leery of the games you are expected to win, but the team is conscience of that and took care of business."
On focus in the final three matches: "We are conscience of the fact that we need to keep winning and improving to make the NCAA's. We have some good opponents coming up and need to be playing the best volleyball we can heading into the PSAC playoffs. It's less about wins and losses and more about quality of play, making sure we are playing our best at the right time."

NOTES
• The Marauders are two wins away from tying the program record for wins in a season. The 1997 and 1995 teams both won 24 matches.
• With 1,038 assists, Laughman moved into fourth place on Millersville's single-season leaderboard. She is 78 assists shy of Missy Rauhauser's school record of 1,116 which was set in 1992. Laughman is one of only two players in program history with 1,000 kills in two seasons and the only player with 900 or more kills in three seasons.
• Suseland, now with 385 kills, is 18 shy of Abby Hafer's school record of 403, which was set in 1995. She is also just 19 kills shy of recording the most career kills by a Marauder.
