MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Offense was hard to come by for 90 minutes in Wednesday's PSAC contest between Millersville and East Stroudsburg, but in the 91
st minute ESU found the game-winner thanks to Marcus Torgersson. The goal shocked a rowdy home crowd at Pucillo Field and the Warriors streamed onto the field to celebrate. Most of the game was played back and forth in the midfield, with quality chances being few and far between.
The loss was the Marauders' first in PSAC play in 2019 and their conference record now moves to 8-1-2 (10-5-2 overall.) The team still controls their own destiny in pursuit of a first-place finish in the PSAC East. A win against Bloomsburg on Saturday would vault the Marauders past West Chester in the East standings and secure a first-round bye and hosting duties for the PSACÂ men's soccer tournament. The team has already clinched a playoff berth for this year's tournament and is guaranteed at least second-place in the East.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• Millersville goalkeeper
Darian McCauley was called upon early to keep the Warriors at bay. In the 25
th minute ESU's Michael Tolley sprinted toward the right side of the box with a player ahead of him waiting for the cross, but McCauley came off his line to dive down and push the shot away.
• McCauley again was forced into action in the 63
rd minute, with Bradley Turocy able to stay onside and sneak behind the defense to force a one-on-one situation. Both players stormed towards the ball and--despite a bit of incidental contact--the ball rolled away and the score remained locked at zero.
• The Marauders finally were able to find an opportunity in the offensive third of the field in the 81
st minute.
Jacob Gosselin trapped a ball and tried to chip it ahead to
Nathan Erb on the right side of the box, but the angle was not right and the chance faded.
• Regulation ended in a scoreless draw but just one minute into the first overtime East Stroudsburg came alive. A long ball from the back bounced off the head of Marcus Torgersson near the top of the box, and then found the head of Bradley Turocy. Torgersson had sprinted towards the goal after the first header, and Turocy nodded the ball towards the left post. Torgersson took the half-volley with his left foot and got it past McCauley to give East Stroudsburg the 1-0 win.
POST GAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON
•
On today's performance: "Thought it was incredibly frustrating. I think we showed a lack of intent and got absolutely nothing done in the attacking third. Our attacking quality and our attacking purpose was just totally lacking. Zero shots on target is a hundred percent unacceptable."
• On the message moving forward into Saturday's game against Bloomsburg: "Obviously the message is we have to be a lot better. We have to show a lot better character, mentality and quality. Our attacking players have to figure out how to cause problems, which we didn't do today. It's a repeated message; the quality that we have up there is lacking. These are the times when you find out the most about players and about people. Today we were lacking so we have to find something within ourselves to make sure that we can improve come Saturday.
