Men's soccer claims PSAC East title after 2-0 win over Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – With a PSAC playoff bye and six days of rest on the line, the Millersville men's soccer team took care of business on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Bloomsburg. The victory secures the PSAC East title for the Marauders, advancing them straight through to the PSAC tournament semi-finals and earning hosting duties as well.

Jacob Gosselin broke a more than 154-minute scoreless drought for Millersville in the 63rd minute of the game when he smashed a shot past the goalkeeper and into the net. Bob Hennessey added a second goal just five minutes later, in the 68th minute, to put the game out of reach.

Pucillo Field on the campus of Millersville University will be the site of the 2019 PSAC Men's Soccer Tournament semifinals and championship game. The semis begin on Friday, Nov. 15 at 3 p.m when the Marauders will face the winner of Tuesday's quarterfinal between Mercyhurst and Slippery Rock.

The other semi-final features Gannon University, the number one seed out of the West, facing the winner of the West Chester vs. East Stroudsburg quarterfinal. That game begins at 5:30 p.m. The championship game takes place on Sunday, Nov. 17th at 1 p.m.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• After a scoreless first half, the Marauders began to pick up steam in the 63rd minute. Matteo Adiletta picked up the ball in midfield and threaded a pass to the feet of Jacob Gosselin at the top of the box. He turned the center back around with his first touch to create space and rocketed a shot towards goalkeeper Nathan Slotnick. Slotnick got a hand on it but the pace of the ball was too much and it carried into the back of the net to give Millersville a 1-0 lead.
• Keeping up the offensive pressure, Anthony Calamia sent a ball ahead towards Gosselin at the left side of the penalty box. Gosselin looped the ball to the far post for the waiting Bob Hennessey, who got in front of his defender for the good finish to seal up the game.

POST GAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON
• On what changed after halftime: "After some very harsh words at the half we finally found a spark and started to cause more problems. Our forwards started to regain their confidence once they started to play positively and with intent and we got rewarded for that better mentality."
• On earning the valuable first-round bye: "The bye is massive but even more so home field advantage. Every team is banged up at this time of the year so 6 days until the next match provides time to recover, refresh and prepare."
• On moving forward and preparing for the postseason: "Pretty simple, give every ounce of effort, focus and energy you have and don't settle with being happy just to be in the playoffs. Aim high and do anything and everything you can to achieve an incredibly difficult goal. Go and write your own piece of history because nobody can ever take that away from you."

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Millersville out-shot Bloomsburg 18-6 with 11 of the Ville's shots on target. Bloomsburg held the advantage in corner kicks 5-2.
• Jacob Gosselin's goal was his 11th of the season. That is the highest total scored by a Marauder since Jaime Vazquez scored 19 goals in 2015.
• Bob Hennessey's goal was his third of the season.
• Spencer Shortt led the Marauders in total shots with four. Matteo Adiletta sent three towards net, with Gosselin shooting twice and scoring once. Six other Marauders were credited with one shot.
• Marauders goalkeeper Darian McCauley was credited with two saves in the game.

NOTES
• The Millersville victory improves the program's all-time record versus Bloomsburg to 35-15-5.
• The last time the Marauders were PSAC East champions was 2008, the last year prior to this one that the PSAC conference was separated into East and West divisions.
• The clean sheet kept by Darian McCauley is his fifth of the season. He has now shut out 23 opponents in his career, which is one shy of the Millersville program record of 24 set by Matt Langione from 2007-2010.
