Millersville, Pa. - Five Marauders scored in double digits as the Millersville University women's basketball team recorded a season-high 89 points against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East rival Shippensburg on Wednesday night in Pucillo Gymnasium. The Marauders trailed by four points entering the final quarter, but outscored the Raiders 30-13 the rest of the way to earn the victory.
Millersville (5-9, 2-5 PSAC) snapped a two-game losing streak, while Shippensburg (6-9, 3-5 PSAC) has now lost three-straight games.
Lauren Lister was the team's leading scorer for the second-straight game, totaling 24 points. She also notched a season-high five steals.
Kendra Bamberger (15),
Olivia Mottern (15),
Courtney Dimoff (11) and
Erika Reed (11) also notched double figures, with Mottern and Reed setting new career highs.
"Having five people in double digits shows that we did a good job of balancing the scoring," head coach
Mary Fleig said. "It was an all-around effort on offense. I thought we distributed the ball well and gave people some open shots."
The Raiders, who entered the game with the fifth-best rebound margin in the PSAC, outrebounded the Marauders 41-28, but Millersville made up for it with a 50.8 shooting percentage, their second highest this season. That includes 45 percent (9-for-20) from beyond the arch, led by Dimoff and Reed who each went 3-for-4 on 3-point attempts.
"I knew it was going to be a challenge rebounding against them," Fleig said. "But, we shot the ball well to make up for not getting some of those rebounds."
Millersville held a slim four-point lead with under three minutes left in regulation. The Marauders then went on an 11-0 run, during which they went 3-for-3 from the floor and held Shippensburg to 0-for-3, to put the game away.
"It was close in the fourth quarter for a little while," Fleig said. "I don't know what they did but they got some big defensive stops and got the running game going to shut it out the last few minutes. We tried to tire them out by the fourth quarter, and it showed."
Ariel Jones, the PSAC's leading scorer, had another strong performance against the Marauders, notching 27 points. However, the Millersville defense held her to a 26.0 shooting percentage (6-for-23), including just 2-for-11 from beyond the arch.
"There were a few times where she eluded us, but we managed to keep her speed in check," Fleig said.
Turnovers badly hurt Shippensburg, as it turned the ball over 24 times, 15 in the first half, compared to the Marauders 10 turnovers. Millersville turned those 24 Raider turnovers into 25 points.

• "They were pounding it into the post and we made a couple of switches on defense to better defend the post. We committed to our defensive match ups for the entire game and did a good job creating turnovers and on our defensive rotations."
