Wrestling tops American International but drops two at Kuztown Duals

Kutztown, Pa. – The No. 25 ranked Millersville University wrestling team prevailed against American International 33-12 in its first match-up of the Kutztown Duals but fell to LIU Post later in the night by a 31-23 score and finished the day with a 27-18 defeat to East Stroudsburg. 

Three Marauders recorded a perfect slate by winning all three matches: 133-pound Ryan McGuire, 165-pound Shane Ruhnke and 285-pound David Wuestner.
 
VS. AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL
• The Marauders began with a quick 12-0 lead due to two forfeits by the Yellow Jackets.
• Coming back from injury, freshman Rob Saum picked up his second win of the season by a 9-5 decision against Ahmad Sharif which extended the Marauders' lead to 15-6.
• At 165, redshirt senior Shane Ruhnke dominated in his first match of the day, pinning Rafiq Conway at the 1:30 mark, enhancing the Millersville's lead to 26-6. Ruhnke picked up his sixth and fastest pin of the season
• The Marauders won three of the last four bouts including freshman Anthony Yacovetti beat Isaiah Collin in a 15-0 technical fall. Following that win, junior Evan Morrill edged Malib Pastrana with a 16-2 major decision which pushed the lead to 30-6.
• Wuestner won 3-1 against Ray Sherwood in overtime.

VS. LIU POST
• After an opening forfeit by the Marauders, McGuire scored a 20-1 technical fall against Jacob Zuller.
• The Pioneers triumphed in the next three bouts, extending their lead to 22-5 with five matches left.
• With his fourth consecutive pin going back to his semifinal bout of the "Shorty", Ruhnke pinned Mike Parrish at the 2:47 mark. Following that win, Yacovetti kept his winning going with a pin against Dan Arkow at the 1:39 mark which closed the margin to five team points with three bouts left.
• Morrill dropped his 184-pound match to Dan McClure in a 5-1 decision which put the Poineers up 25-17. The Marauders had to forfeit at 197-pound weight class but Wuestner responded by pinning Tim Nagosky at 2:08.

• McGuire opened the dual with a 10-6 decision but the Warriors responded and won the next three bouts, earning an 18-3 lead going into the 165-pound weight class.
• With his seventh consecutive win, Ruhnke was able to control the match against Richard Viruet for an 18-6 major decision, trimming the deficit to 11.
• In the last four bouts, Millersville and East Stroudsburg went back-and-forth. Morrill pinned his opponent at 1:43 and Wuestner wrapped up the day with a 16-1 technical fall against Cameron Kates.

• "I was very proud of the guys who fought through adversity today. We have had quite a bit of it lately with injuries and such. I need to do a better job in making sure we fill the roster with guys who can fight through adversity during the entire year."
• "Each guy did a good job of focusing on themselves. We won a lot of individual matches today. I'm proud of them."
 
NOTES
• The Marauders picked up their first dual victory since first dual meet of the season.
• Saum earned his first victory since the Delaware Valley's dual meet. Yacovetti secured two wins on the day and improved his season win total to six including his first pin of his collegiate career in the LIU Post dual.
• Following a fourth-place finish at the "Shorty", Wuestner kept the momentum going by winning three and capturing his 12th victory of the season.
• Ruhnke improved to 16-2 overall and 5-1 in duals. With his three wins on the day, McGuire captured the 14th win of his career. Wuestner joined Ruhnke and McGuire with 12 or more victories on the season.

• The Marauders are back in action Sunday, Jan. 27 at 1 p.m. when they go head-to-head with Division I Lock Haven.
