SecsABOUT THE MATCH
- Millersville Wrestling will travel to East Stroudsburg, Pa., to compete in the annual NCAA Division II Super Regional I championships. For this tournament, the wrestling program selects its 10 starters in each weight class to compete to punch their ticket to the NCAA championships. 12 teams are competing at the Super Regional I in East Stroudsburg. The wrestlers in first, second, or third place within their respective weight class will move onto the big stage to compete for a chance to be deemed a national champion.
SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS
- Wrestling at 125 pounds is redshirt freshman Gavin Boland. He has big shoes to fill as he replaces Bryce Beatty, who graduated last spring and was a national qualifier last season. Boland sits at 10-13 overall and has been battling a leg injury over the past couple of weeks. He should be close to full health as he enters his first Super Region Tournament.
- Collin Higgins will represent Millersville at 133 pounds. The senior took over the 133-pound spot following Cottone’s move back up to 141 pounds. He has recorded a 10-15 record on the year while going 4-4 in dual competitions. He, along with Boland, will enter his first Super Region Tournament.
- Previous national qualifier Nick Cottone will compete at 141 pounds for the Marauders. The New Jersey native started the year at 133 pounds before moving back up to his original weight class at the midway point of the season. He enters Saturday ranked fourth in the region with a 12-10 overall record. His previous experience will be critical as he looks to repeat as a national qualifier.
- Redshirt senior Taylor Robinson will compete at 149 pounds for Millersville. Robinson competed at 133 pounds last season and made the jump up heading into his final year. His experience, along with Cottone’s, could help him navigate through the tournament after being nationally ranked in the past. He currently sits at 13-12 entering his final Super Region Tournament.
- Richie DeFulvio has had a standout freshman season. He will represent the Marauders at 157 and is ranked third in the region. DeFulvio started the year strong, winning the Pioneer Open. Midseason, he bounced between wins and losses but gained momentum after winning his final two dual matches against Pitt-Johnstown and Kutztown. The freshman holds an 11-9 record entering his first Super Region Tournament.
- Chase Bish, out of National Park, NJ, will compete at 165 pounds. The sophomore is the third Marauder with previous Super Region experience. Bish has been out for the past month battling a shoulder injury and will make his long-awaited return on Saturday at East Stroudsburg. His sophomore campaign has been strong, as he currently holds a 16-10 record. He has also performed well in tournaments, posting a 14-7 record. He enters Saturday ranked fifth in a strong 165 class.
- Freshman Jack Weldon will represent Millersville at 174 pounds. The stat sheet does not fully reflect Weldon’s rookie performance. The Coatesville native sits at 4-8 on the year but has dropped multiple matches by narrow margins. Weldon will look to turn that momentum around entering Saturday’s tournament.
- Avery Aurand steps up to the mat at 184 pounds. Aurand sits at 12-11 after bouncing between 184 and 197 pounds this season. He is fresh off winning the Messiah Open at 184 pounds, where he went 3-0 with a fall and two decision victories to claim the title. He will be a name to watch, as he holds an 8-6 tournament record in his first year as a Marauder.
- Jaxon Townsend represents Millersville at 197 pounds. The redshirt freshman has had a strong campaign this season, recording an 11-9 record with seven of those victories coming by fall. Townsend currently ranks fourth in the region and will look to set the tone early. After showing multiple flashes throughout the season, he will look to put his experience to the test on Saturday.
- Rounding out the squad at 285 pounds is Kurt Scheurman. He is in his second year with the program after transferring from the football team. The sophomore is still adjusting, as he holds an overall record of 4-15 this season. He is another Marauder entering his first career Super Region Tournament.
