Mercyhurst rallies to down Millersville in five

Erie, Pa. - Millersville won sets two and three, but Mercyhurst rallied on its home floor, winning sets four and five to take Saturday's PSAC match, 3-2 (25-20, 18-25, 17-25, 25-20, 15-10).

Mercyhurst was edged by West Chester in five sets less than 24 hours earlier, but Saturday was a different story. The Lakers (7-10, 2-2 PSAC), totaled 16 kills, three blocks and just three hitting errors in the fourth, extending the match to a deciding fifth. In the fifth, Mercyhurst totaled 12 kills to Millersville's (7-6, 2-2 PSAC) four.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• The Marauders overcame a slow start and first set loss by rolling in the second and third sets. Millersville totaled 13 kills in the second and 16 kills, two blocks and two aces in the third. The Marauders led by as many as nine (19-10) in the second set. A 6-1 run midway through the third put the Marauders in front by as many as 10 (21-11).
• The match turned early in the third as Mercyhurst scored the first nine points of the set. Katie Baird, who finished with 19 kills, had six of those kills in the fourth. The Marauders outscored Mercyhurst 19-16 after the initial nine-point deficit.
• Another quick start for the Lakers was key in the fifth. They built a 4-1 lead with two more kills from Baird. A Jayci Suseland kill brought the Marauders to within two (6-4), but the Lakers got a kill from Beth Brady and two from Baird to extend the lead. Millersville hit .053 in the fifth, committing three errors as well as two service errors.

COACH BRIAN SMITH QUOTES
• "We didn't change anything (after the third set). It was a variety of things. We had a lot of errors in those first nine points. I really thought we could come back from that but we needed a couple of runs. We had some but just one too few. We outscored them after giving up a 9-0 lead. In the fifth set, anyone can win that.
• "In the fourth set they had [Katie Baird] lined up against Chyna (Gubbings) and Katie (Laughman). We have middles who aren't really middles playing that position and Katie is an undersized setter. They kept hitting hard into the hands. We tried to make an adjustment which meant Jayci wouldn't start in the front row. They got some bounces and had confidence going into the fifth. We didn't pass well, got into a hole and couldn't crawl out of it."
• "We are young--no seniors and a couple juniors. There were some bright spots. Emily (Hoffman) played super well for us today. Kat (Forry) passed extremely well. We just need a little more consistency, a little more mental toughness, just a little bit better. You have to keep fighting, not take anything for granted. We aren't a team that can give teams a nine-point lead and think we can come back. We just have to clean up our act a little bit more."

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
• Suseland led the Marauders with 19 kills, coming within one of her season high.
• Forry led the team with 25 digs, which was one away from her season. Emily Hoffman's 10 digs were a career high.
• Forry led the team with four aces. She has at least one aces in each of her last eight matches.
Lindsey Blevins posted a double-double with 13 kills and a season-high 22 digs.
Katie Laughman's 42 assists matched a season high.

NOTES
• Millersville recorded a season-high 11 blocks.
• Four of Millersville's six losses have come in four or five sets.

UP NEXT
• Millersville hosts PSAC Central foes Lock Haven and Bloomsburg on Friday, Sept. 28 and Saturday, Sept. 29.
