Erie, Pa. - No. 22 Gannon had to wait nearly a full month to play its first home match, and it looked glad to be back in the Hammermill Center, dispatching the visiting Millersville Marauders 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-14) on Friday night.
Millersville had entered the match winners of three in a row and six of the last seven. The Marauders' record dropped to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in PSAC play. Gannon improved to 13-1 (2-1 PSAC), bouncing back from its lone loss of the season. Last season, Gannon finished as the PSAC runner-up and reached the NCAA Semifinals. Ten of the team's 13 wins in 2018 have come by sweep.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• Ten of Millersville's 26 kills in the match came in the first set. The teams were tied at 9-9 after
Courtney Turocy kill, but Gannon ripped off six of the next seven points with three kills and three attack errors. The Golden Knight's advantage grew to 21-14 before the Marauders mounted a charge. A
Lindsey Blevins kill, two
Kat Forry aces and a Gannon error closed the gap to three. Blevins struck again to narrow Gannon's lead to 22-20, but the Golden Knights closed the set with a Lexi Johnson kill and back-to-back Ally Smith aces. While the Marauders totaled 10 kills, it also totaled 10 hitting errors with Gannon totaling five blocks.
• Gannon's six aces were key to its second set win. Millersville scored the set's first two points but again, Ally Smith hurt the Marauders with her serve. She posted three consecutive aces in one stretch, helping Gannon build a lead of as many as seven and no fewer than three.
• Millersville posted eight kills and eight errors as well as three service errors in the third set. Gannon scored the first seven points of the set on four kills and three Marauder hitting errors, and Gannon led by no fewer than five the rest of the way.
• Millersville allowed a season-high 10 aces, and Gannon also bothered the Marauders at the net, totaling eight blocks.
COACH BRIAN SMITH QUOTES
• "We were in the first set. Statistically they had us down for 10 receiving errors but that wasn't the half of it. We were running Katie (Laughman) off the net all day long. All the things we thought we could do offensively, we didn't have a chance to test them because we were out of system. They have some good blockers and the outsider hitters are hitting against a good block every time because the setter is getting bad passes you aren't going to have a lot of success."
• "It was really about ball control. We've struggled with that because we are a very young team. It's hard to drive six hours and play and then you start to struggle and lose confidence. We don't have that senior leadership and haven't beaten Gannon in a long time. We lost confidence and Gannon picked up on it and got more and more aggressive with their serves. It snowballed."
• "You are going to have matches were you struggle. Every team will. It is how you rebound from that. We have to let this one go, have a short memory. We are capable of playing much better. We have to come out tomorrow, handle the first contact better so we can run our offense and do the things we've scouted and how we think we can score. We have a lot of conference ahead of us so we will handle it one match at a time."
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
• Blevins led the Marauders with nine kills but hit a season-low .118.
Jayci Suseland's .182 hitting percentage was also a season-low as she finished with eight kills and four errors.
Katie Laughman's 17 assists were a season-low as well.
•
Kat Forry led the Marauders with 15 digs and two aces.
NOTES
•
Kat Forry has recorded at least one ace in each of the last seven matches.
• Blevins's run of consecutive matches with double-digit kills ended at five.
• Millersville fell to 2-15 all-time against Gannon with its last win in the series coming in 1994.
