Clarion, Pa. - The Millersville women's volleyball team suffered its first losses of 2018 Friday, dropping four-set matches to Ohio Dominican and Cedarville. The Marauders' record drops to 1-2 on the season.
Ohio Dominican 3, Millersville 1 (25-16, 16-25, 25-13, 27-25)
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• Millersville rolled to a 25-16 set two victory by totaling 14 kills to just two errors. Millersville also recorded 14 kills in the second set.
• Millersville nearly extended the match to five sets, pushing the fourth set into extra points before falling, 27-25. Neither team led by more than three points the entire set. Ohio Dominican took a 24-23 lead before a kill from
Lindsey Blevins made it 24-24. The teams trade the next three points with Ohio Dominican receiving kills from Allie Rutter and Rebecca Skidmore, while Millersville's
Jayci Suseland hammered home an assist from
Katie Laughman. Ohio Dominican, leading 26-25, closed the set and the match with a kill from Ashton Barr.
• Millersville totaled 47 kills and posted a .204 hitting percentage compared to Ohio Dominican's 60 kills and .290 hitting percentage. The real difference came at the net where Ohio Dominican totaled 7 ½ blocks.
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
• Suseland followed up her debut performance of 14 kills and two errors with 20 kills and two errors. She hit .462 in the match.
• Blevins recorded a season-high 17 kills on 40 swings. It was the sixth career match with 17 or more kills for Blevins.
• Laughman's 40 assists were a season-high and the seventh 40-assist match of her career.
• Freshman
Maddee Luring recorded a career-high three service aces.
Cedarville 3, Millersville 1 (25-23, 25-19, 22-25, 25-16)
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• Millersville hit a season-low .126, committing 26 hitting errors—the most in a match since Sept. 29, 2017. Still, the Marauders forced four sets and played Cedarville close in the first and second sets.
• Millersville's cleanest set was the first in which it totaled a match-high 15 kills to four errors. Cedarville led 20-16 before Blevins recorded a kill,
Chyna Gubbings delivered an ace and
Abby Perkins and Laughman followed with kills, evening the score at 20-20. Cedarville pulled to set point at 24-22, but Suseland extended the set with a kill. Faith Ferris of Cedarville, however, closed the 25-23 win with a kill.
• Millersville failed to post an attack percentage better than .100 after the first but still managed a win in the third set. The Marauders committed nine errors but were helped by nine Cedarville attack errors. The Marauders built a 5-0 lead with kills from Suseland, Blevins and Gubbings. Cedarville pulled even at 8-8, but Millersville scored seven of the next eight points—a run that included service aces from
Courtney Turocy and Gubbings. Millersville led by as many as seven but four Cedarville points in a row pulled it to within 23-22. The Marauders, however, closed the set with a kill from Blevins and an Cedarville error.
• The fourth set was all Cedarville as it totaled 18 kills to three errors while Millersville mustered nine kills.
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
• Blevins recorded a season-high 20 kills on 58 attacks, posting a team-high .259 hitting percentage. Blevins completed the double-double with 13 digs.
• Four Marauders recorded 10 or more digs.
Kat Forry led the way with a season-high 26. It was the fifth-highest total of her career.
• Millersville posted a season-high 16 block assists for nine total blocks. Gubbings posted five block assists as well as two aces. Perkins recorded three block assists and the team's lone block solo.
NOTES
• Before Friday, Millersville had never before played either Ohio Dominican or Cedarville.
• Forry has recorded double-digit digs in 13 of her last 14 matches going back to last season.
• Blevins has totaled double-digit kills in 10 of her last 14 matches dating back to 2017 and has committed more than five errors in just four of those matches.
