Millersville volleyball edged by Ursuline in three

Clarion, Pa. - Ursuline narrowly edged Millersville in three sets Saturday afternoon in Clarion. The Saints won two of the sets in extra points and the third by a three-point margin (27-25, 28-26, 25-22). Millersville dropped its third match in a row to fall to 1-3 while Ursuline improved to 3-2.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• Neither team led by more than four points the entire first set. The Marauders held set point at 24-23 following a Courtney Turocy kill. Ursuline, however, scored the next two points to extend the set. An Ursuline service error evened the score back to 25 all. Ursuline's Nora Clink and a Millersville attack error, however, sealed the first set win for the Saints. Turocy recorded seven kills in 10 swings, helping Millersville total 16 kills to just four errors.
• The second set also went down to the wire. The Marauders once again held set point at 24-22, but Ursuline responded after a timeout with a kill from Angela Zamora. An attack error from Millersville evened the score at 24. The teams traded points until Zoe Skinner and Victoria Henderson delivered back-to-back kills to clinch the set two win for Ursuline.
• Ursuline built a 23-16 lead, but Millersville showed resolve. A pair of Ursuline attack errors sparked a 6-1 Millersville run that included a a block by Lindsey Blevins and Samantha Miller, and a pair of Jayci Suseland kills. The Marauders closed the gap to 24-22 before Kyle Krnac closed the match with a kill of her own.

COACH SMITH QUOTES
• "Last year we started strong but didn't learn anything from that level of play. We didn't get prepared to get into conference play. This year we chose to play teams that are regionally stronger. We played quality teams. Today we lost three close sets. The ball bounces one way down the stretch the other direction and we win."
• "We were banged up. We didn't have one of our starters (Haley Butler). We had to make some adjustments. Courtney (Turocy) stepped in and played lights out. She's didn't get a chance to show what she could do last year as a freshman."
• "I couldn't be more happy--aside from having losses--with what we were able to learn and take away from this experience. We are setting ourselves up. Two weeks from now we are 0-0. Our only mission this year is to make the conference playoffs. This is what this team needed at this time. I am pleased with that."
• "We were down six points in the third set and I told (the team), 'This is going to define you. Are we going to call it a day or fight back?' They fought back and nearly erased that deficit."
•  "It tested our willingness to continue to fight in matches when we run into adversity and skill and talent on the other side of the court."

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
• Suseland led Millersville with 14 kills on 40 attempts (.250). Turocy finished with 10 ills on 23 attempts (.304).
• Three Marauders totaled double-digit digs. Kat Forry led with 18, Katie Laughman totaled 15, and Chyna Gubbings added 13.
• Laughman finished with 33 assists.

NOTES
• Saturday was the first-ever meeting between Millersville and Ursuline.
• Laughman has two double-doubles through four matches, and has recorded at least 33 assists in each of the last three matches.
• Suseland's 40 attempts were a season-high. She has double-digit kills in all four matches and has committed no more than four hitting errors in any match.
• Turocy's 10 kills were a career high.
