Ville falls at home to Slippery Rock

Millersville, Pa. -- The Marauders dropped their match with Slippery Rock, 12-10, Friday night.

Millersville started the game on a 4-1 scoring run that stunned the Rock's bench. Following sophomore Sarah Leverentz's goal, with 18:44 remaining in the first half, Slippery Rock called a timeout to readjust its tactics. Bre Vodde and Tia Torchia led a 5-0 scoring run that gave Slippery Rock a 6-4 lead in the final minutes of the first half. Senior Callie Cavanaugh and freshman Genevieve Speights ripped off answering goals in the final four minutes to tie up the game. However, the Rock mustered one last goal with 25 seconds left and took a 7-6 lead into halftime.

Slippery Rock opened up the second half with a 4-2 scoring run to earn an 11-8 lead with just over 15 minutes remaining in the game. Senior Sabrina Fusco sparked a 2-1 scoring run for the Marauders to cut the lead to two with over seven minutes remaining in the game. The teams vied for possession in the closing minutes, and Millersville earned one last chance to spark a comeback. Fusco earned a free-position attempt 96 seconds left on the clock, but she lost her balance in her set up, causing a false start and a turnover. The Rock gained possession and played keep away to run out the clock.

Millersville placed 22 of its 26 shots on goal, but Emily Bitka, who ranks as one of the best goalies statistically in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, saved 12 shots and denied Millersville a win at home.

Fusco led the Marauders with four goals and two assists. She also led all scorers with three free-position goals on four attempts.

Senior Kristen Butzner scored a hat trick while assisting one more goal. She finished second on the team with four points.

Millersville dominated draw controls, winning 16 while the Rock only won eight. Sophomore Jasa Lorah led all players with a whopping seven draw control wins.

The Marauders fell to 7-4 and 3-4 in the PSAC. Millersville played its last home game for two weeks. The Marauders need to pick up wins in their upcoming three-straight away matches to continue their push for the playoffs. Millersville's next game is its last out-of-conference match of the season, as it travels to Shepherd University on Monday, April 9. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
