Ville blasts Shepherd 18-4; Fusco and Butzner reach major milestones

Shepherdstown, W.V. -- Millersville earned a dominant 18-4 victory at Shepherd to earn its fifth-straight out-of-conference victory. During the game, senior attackers Sabrina Fusco and Kristen Butzner recorded their 250th and 100th career points respectively.

Shepherd's Lillian Funke gave the Rams a 1-0 lead in the opening 40 seconds. Millersville regrouped and responded with seven unanswered goals as the Marauders turned up the offensive and defensive pressure. Sophomore Sara Burney sparked the scoring run and scored twice during the 7-0 run, and senior Callie Kavanaugh also added two goals to the scoring run.

Shepherd got one back with 2:11 remaining in the first half and cut Millersville's lead to 7-2. Millersville's senior points leaders canceled out the goal as Butzner fed Fusco for the team's eighth goal of the day with a minute remaining in the first half. The score held and the Marauders took an 8-2 advantage into halftime.

Butzner and Fusco started the second half in the same fashion that the duo ended the first half, and they reached significant milestones in the process. In the opening two minutes, Butzner found Fusco to give Millersville a 9-2 lead. On the play, Fusco recorded her 250th career point and 200th career goal while Butzner recorded her 100th career point.

Shepherd mustered a response 95 seconds later to cut the lead back to six. The score held at 9-3 for several minutes until Millersville sparked another extended scoring run.

Kavanaugh and freshman Genevieve Speights started the run with a combined three goals in only 21 seconds. Kavanaugh's attempt found the back of the net with 19:31 remaining in the second half. Speights immediately won the draw control and scored nine seconds later. Again, Speights won the corresponding draw control, and pushed the ball up field. Junior Erin Fagan found Kavanaugh, and Millersville was up 12-3 with 19:10 remaining in the game.

Fusco and Kavanaugh combined for three more goals in the following six-plus minutes and earned a 15-3 lead. Funke got one back for Shepherd with 9:22 remaining in the game, but Millersville responded with three more unanswered goals in the final three minutes, including two in the final minute.

Kavanaugh led all scorers with five goals. It was the third time this season that Kavanaugh scored five or more goals in a single game.

Fusco finished with four goals which ranked second on the team. She now has 50 goals on the season for the third time in her career. With at least five games left in the season, she has an opportunity to top her career-high 56 goals during her sophomore season. Fusco now has 252 career points and 202 career goals which are program-highs.

Butzner finished tied for first with Kavanaugh with six points. She assisted five goals while scoring one more. Butzner continues to shine as the facilitator of the offense. Of her 101 career-points as a Marauder, she has registered 69 points this season alone. Her 47 assists this season ranks second in the PSAC.

Millersville improved to 8-4 on the season while remaining 3-4 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The Marauders continue their away-stretch at No. 22 Mercyhurst on Saturday, April 14 at 1 p.m.
