Women’s tennis wins its first match of the season

Box Score Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville University women's tennis team captured its first victory as a team this season, defeating Kutztown 7-2 Saturday afternoon. 

Millersville won four of its five singles matches.

No. 1 single Katina Jones defeated Taylor Capoferri, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1. Capoferri won the first set with six games that went her way. Then, Jones won 7-5 in the second set that pushed it to the third set. Jones finished the third set with a 6-1 victory. Jones recorded her seventh win of the season and stayed 2-0 in conference single matches.

In No. 2 singles, freshman Megan Rovenolt and Yasmeen Malik went to the tiebreaker in the second set to decide the match. Rovenolt took the first set, 6-4. Rovenolt and Malik went back and forth in the second set to tie at 6-6. Rovenolt won five in the tiebreaker situation to earn her first career victory.

Freshman Victoria Hanus, junior Kelley Hershey and freshman Lauren Weaver picked up wins. Hanus got her first career victory today.

In the No. 1 doubles matchup, Jones and Rovenolt won 8-2 over Capoferri and Kara Urland. Millersville's No. 3 doubles, Hanus and Weaver, defeated Ashley Carter and Shadimon Navarro in an 8-1 decision. Both doubles claimed their second win as a team.

The Marauders return home on Monday, April 2 at 3 p.m. against Usciences.
