York, Pa. - Millersville University's outdoor track and field team opened its 2018 campaign at York College Wednesday. Despite less than ideal conditions, Millersville athletes won five events including all four throwing events.
Even with a limited roster, Millersville took first place in the team race, besting 11 other teams with 126 points.
Junior Sunflower Greene, the reigning PSAC Outdoor (and Indoor) Field Athlete of the Year, won the shot put and hammer throw and finished second to teammate Madison Martin the discus. Amanda Myers took first in the javelin. Sophomore Brianna Doherty took first in the high jump as well.
Greene hit a NCAA provisional qualifying distance of 49-5 1/2 in the shot put. That mark won the event by nearly 12 feet and it was the PSAC best mark of 2018 by more than three feet.
Millersville took the top four spots in the hammer throw with Greene's NCAA provisional mark of 175-1 leading the way. Martin qualified for the PSAC Championships and placed second at 156-6--a career best. Myers came in third with a PSAC qualifying mark of 155-2. Stephanie Garner also hit a PSAC qualifier with a career-best toss of 145-8, placing her in fourth.
Martin also set a new PR in the discus with a PSAC qualifying toss of 135-8. Greene's toss of 124-9 landed her in second, and freshman Aliyah Striver took third with a PSAC qualifying distance of 117-9.
Myers' PSAC qualifying mark of 132-11 won the javelin event by more than 20 feet. It was also the best mark in the PSAC this season.
Doherty's first-place finish in the long jump came on a leap of 17-9 1/2. Teammate Destinee Holloman placed second with a jump of 17-0 3/4.
The majority of Millersville's sprinters did not compete. Arianna Camel placed third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.17. She also was the runner-up in the 100-meter dash (12.74).
Millersville hosts its only home event of the season, the Millersville Metrics, on April 7.
