Ville upsets No. 22 Lock Haven with a last-second goal

Millersville, Pa. -- Freshman Genevieve Speights' go-ahead goal in the final seconds of the game sealed Millersville's 16-15 upset victory over No. 22 Lock Haven Wednesday evening.

On the night that senior Kristen Butzner set the new single-season assist record of 33 assists, it was her fifth assist of the game that made the most impact. Redshirt junior Shannon Davis saved Lock Haven's free-position attempt with 51 seconds left on the clock and the score knotted up at 15-15, and Millersville raced up the field for one last offensive opportunity. Following the successful clear, Butzner fed Speights as she streaked through the crease. Speights quickly fired her shot past the Lock Haven keeper and into the net.

Lock Haven Head Coach Lindsay Reese immediately challenged the goal knowing, with only four seconds left on the clock, her options were limited to force overtime. The officials walked Speights' stick over to the scorer's table to measure the basket with a tape measure. After several minutes, the officials ruled the basket depth was within the legal limit and the bench erupted.

Following the failed challenge, Lock Haven needed to win the final face-off of the game to get off a desperation lob. Instead, Speights won the draw control and raced up the field to seal the win as the buzzer rang in Biemesderfer Stadium.

The ending of the game was vastly different to how the game started. The Lock Haven offense started fast and built a 5-1 lead in the game's opening nine minutes. The Marauders scored their second goal of the game over 11 minutes later to cut the Bald Eagles' lead to 5-2. That goal sparked a 5-3 run for the Marauders and cut Lock Haven's lead to only 8-6 at halftime.

The teams played back and forth in the opening minutes of the second half, and Millersville finally tied up the game in the opening six minutes. The back-and-forth scoring persisted with three more ties and three more lead changes as Lock Haven scored a goal after every tying goal from Millersville.

Finally, with the game knotted up 13-13, Millersville leaned on its lethal attacking combo. Butzner fed senior Sabrina Fusco in the crease, and she fired the ball into the net to take Millersville's first lead of the game with only 5:26 remaining in the contest. The pace of the earlier lead changes flip-flopped as Millersville scored shortly after each tying goal from Lock Haven.

Down only one in the final three minutes, momentum shifted in Lock Haven's favor. The Bald Eagles earned a fresh shot clock after a controversial pass, from behind the Millersville goal, hit the crossbar and the referees signaled the shot clock reset. Lock Haven restarted its attack and quickly earned a free-position attempt. Alex O'Herrick buried her attempt and was fouled in the process. Lock Haven was awarded the subsequent draw control to try and take back the lead in the final two minutes. Lock Haven set up its offense again and forced the foul from junior Erin Fagan to earn the free-position attempt. However, Davis faced down the shot and made her clutch save to set up Millersville's final attack.

Butzner broke Abby Mack's single-season assist record seven minutes into the game. Sophomore Sarah Leverentz dodged a diving defender in the attacking area and passed the ball to Butzner who was parallel with the goal. Butzner immediately fed the ball to senior Callie Kavanaugh who was cutting towards the goal. Kavanaugh's quick shot found the net and gave Butzner the record.

Butzner led all players with seven points as she recorded five assists and scored two goals. Butzner now sits with 37 assists and 52 points which both rank first on the team this season. She still sits at the top of the PSAC in points and second in assists.

Kavanaugh led the Marauders with four goals during the contest. She scored on two of her three free-position attempts. Kavanaugh has 23 goals on the season which ranks second on the team. Her eight goals from the free-position leads the team.

Speights and Fusco both finished with hat tricks. The players came alive in the second period as they each scored two goals in the second half. Fusco scored her two in the final 5:30 while Speights scored early in the half before netting her game-winner.

The Marauders improved to 6-2 and 2-2 in the PSAC. The win against Lock Haven was their second game against a nationally-ranked opponent this week and the first win over a nationally-ranked opponent this season. Millersville has an opportunity to increase that number as it travels to Indiana, Pa. to take on the No. 19 Crimson Hawks on Saturday, March 31. The opening face-off is set for 1 p.m.
