Indiana, Pa. -- The Millersville women's lacrosse team fell to No. 19 Indiana (Pa.) 22-14 Saturday afternoon.
Days after completing their upset bid at home against No. 22 Lock Haven, the Marauders were unable to play the role of spoilers for a second-straight game.Â
The teams played a back and forth game early. Millersville opened the game on a 2-0 run before IUP answered with a 4-0 run. Millersville ripped off three straight goals to take a 5-4 lead before IUP and Millersville traded goals to earn a 7-7 tie with less than 12 minutes remaining in the first half. However, IUP's offense started to overwhelm the Millersville defense, and the Crimson Hawks finished the first half on a 5-1 run to take a 12-8 lead at halftime.
The Crimson Hawks put the game out of reach in the opening four minutes of the second half. A 4-0 run gave IUP its first eight-goal lead of the day. For the rest of the game, every time Millersville scored a goal, IUP answered to keep its lead intact.
IUP's success on the draw control laid the foundation for its win. The Crimson Hawks won 29 draw controls while the Marauders earned nine. IUP's Katie Martyn won 19 of the draw controls which allowed the Crimson Hawks to keep the offensive pressure up.
Junior
Erin Fagan led the Marauders in scoring. The midfielder scored four goals and converted two of her three free-position shots.
Senior attackers
Sabrina Fusco and
Callie Kavanaugh each netted hat tricks for the Marauders. The duo continue to lead the goal-scoring efforts for Millersville this season as Fusco has 39 and Kavanaugh has 26 which rank first and second on the team.
Millersville fell to 6-3 and 2-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The team returns home to host PSAC rival Shippensburg on Tuesday, April, 3. The game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
