Sparks, Maryland -- The Millersville women's lacrosse team was ranked 20th in Division II in US Lacrosse Magazine's weekly national poll Monday. It's Millersville's first national ranking under Head Coach Mia Hall.
Millersville earned its ranking after an impressive 22-12 win over the weekend against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Edinboro University.
Offensively the team is on fire as the Marauders steamrolled their opening five opponents 103-32. Seniors Sabrina Fusco, Callie Kavanaugh, and Kristen Butzner as well as sophomore Sarah Leverentz all scored double-digit goals to open the season. Fusco has ripped off 27 goals which ranks first in the PSAC and earned Fusco the all-time goal scoring title in Millersville history.
Furthermore, the offense is playing as a cohesive unit and passes its way into shots. Currently, 57 of the 103 total goals had an assist. Butzner leads the way with 28 assists which ranks first in the PSAC.
Millersville has shelled opposing goal keepers and averaged more than 23 shots more than its opponents. The Marauders' aggression on offense frustrated opponents into committing fouls, and Millersville is averaging 8.2 free position shots per game. Kavanaugh leads the team at the free position with six goals on ten attempts.
Defensively, Millersville is holding opponents to only 6.4 goals per game. Senior captain Morgan Masiejczyk's defensive unit ranks top-5 in the PSAC in caused turnovers and groundballs.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Shannon Davis locked down the net for Millersville. She currently ranks in the top-10 in conference in goals against average and saves percentage.
Millersville will look to move up in the polls as it heads to East Stroudsburg, Pa. on March 23 to take on the No.15 Warriors. East Stroudsburg was ranked 15th in the US Lacrosse Magazine poll and 20th in the NCAA Division II poll this week. The match will start at 1 p.m.
