
Swimming begins 2018 in sunny Florida

Boca Raton, Fla. – The Millersville University women's swimming team ended its two month layoff with the 2018 Lynn Sprint Invitational in Florida Saturday afternoon. The Marauders competed against host Lynn University and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) member California (Pa.).
Millersville placed third with 529.5 points. Lynn won the invitational with 770.5 points. CalU was 40 points shy of the host team.
Senior Emily Fusco claimed victory in the 100-yard backstroke. With a two second advantage from the second place finisher, Fusco touched the wall at 1:00.99. Fusco's teammates, sophomore Madisson Cartmill and sophomore Amanda Wetzler, placed fourth and fifth. Cartmill recorded 1:04.14 and Wetzler finished with a time of 1:05.56 in the 100-yard backstroke.
Fusco was three seconds off the leader in the 100-yard individual medley. This was the first time Fusco competed in the event this season.
Millersville took second place in the 200-yard medley relay. The squad included Fusco, Wetzler, sophomore Mariana Bernal and freshman Leah Barrett. The Marauders finished with a time of 1:55.42, two seconds shy of Lynn's A team.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Barrett earned third place but was 36 seconds off the leader, Kira N. Goin of CalU. Barrett's time was 26.78. Freshman Alexis Shollenberger hit the wall at 27.83 that put her in fifth place in the 50-yard freestyle.
Taylour Mauro finished the 50-yard breastroke in 36.57 which resulted in a fourth-place finish. In the 500-yard freestyle, sophomore Jessica Berry swam a 5:42.64 for fourth place. Berry's performance was the second fastest for the team in the event this season. Berry placed sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke by finishing at the time of 1:19.18.
The last event was the 200-yard freestyle relay where the Marauders finished third, sixth and seventh. The third-place squad came from the performance of Wetzler, Shollenberger, Barrett and junior Amira Washington. They tapped the wall at 1:48.30. The squad was one second off second place and four seconds off the leader.
The Marauders return home on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 1 p.m. against East Stroudsburg for Senior Day.
