West Chester, Pa. -- Millersville's two game winning streak was snapped by PSAC East leading West Chester Wednesday night after the Golden Rams bested the Marauders 82-63.
The Marauders and the Golden Rams played an up and down first half that included two lead changes. The Marauders held the lead for only 27 seconds, while the Golden Rams held the lead for the rest of the first half. West Chester lead by as much as ten twice during the first half, but Millersville battled back and cut the lead to three deep into the second quarter. The Golden Rams ended the half on a 4-1 run to build their lead to seven points and enter the locker room with a 44-37 lead over the Marauders.
West Chester earned its first half lead with rebounding. The Golden Rams lead the Marauders 29-17 on the boards which earned eight more field goal attempts. Millersville's defense held West Chester to only 37.5 percent shooting from the field, but the Golden Rams shot hot from the three point line and drained seven treys which helped power the team's longer runs. West Chester's two leading scorers on the season lead the way during the first half as Porscha Speller netted 14 points and Mia Hopkins scored 11. The third quarter provided the separation West Chester needed to put the game out of reach. Millersville's shots failed to find the bottom of the net as the team shot 4-17 from the field while West Chester shot 50 percent from the field. The Marauders turned it around in the fourth quarter and cut West Chester's lead down to single digits with more than five minutes left to play. However, Millersville could not spark the comeback they needed, and West Chester closed out the game on a 15-5 run.
West Chester's duo of Speller and Hopkins finished with a combined 45 points as both players scored over 20 points. Hopkins matched her scoring with rebounding as she notched her third straight double double this season. Two more Golden Rams scored over double figures to edge out Millersville's scoring efforts.
Hall lead the Marauders with 18 points while shooting 40 percent from the field. The guard snagged six rebounds, assisted two more buckets and stole the ball once during her 39 minutes on the court. Hall extended her double digit scoring streak to 18 straight games while she has scored in double figures 19 of 20 games this season.
Lister started her third straight game and scored in double figures for the third straight game. The reigning PSAC Co-Athlete of the Week finished with 12 points on 46 percent shooting. She snagged five rebounds along with two assists and two steals during her 34 minutes on the court.
Redshirt junior
Kendra Bamberger registered her third double double of her career and her second of the season. The forward snagged 10 rebounds while scoring 10 points on 50 percent shooting. Bamberger has scored in double figures in two of her last three games.
Millersville fell to 10-10 on the season and 7-9 in the PSAC. The Marauders still sit only a game behind third-seeded Kutztown after the Golden Bears dropped their game at Bloomsburg. The Marauders play their second straight game away from Pucillo Gymnasium against Cheyney on Feb. 3 at 1 p.m.
