Erie, Pa. -- The Marauders cut Gannon's lead, which they had held for over 34 minutes, to one possession in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, but the Golden Knights shot near perfect from the free throw line down the stretch to stifle the Marauders' comeback and win 65-56 Saturday afternoon.
After the Marauders earned the first lead of the game following senior
Alayah Hall's lay up in the opening 40 seconds of play, the Golden Knights took their first lead of the game three minutes into the first quarter and, despite Millersville cutting the lead to one possession on multiple instances, Gannon held the lead until the final buzzer.
The first quarter set the teams apart as Gannon outscored Millersville 17-8. The Golden Knights set the tone shooting 7-11 and 3-7 from the three point line while attempting one more field goal attempt than the Marauders in the opening period. Setting the first quarter aside, Millersville got over their slower start and equaled Gannon's scoring in the remaining quarters.Â
One of the keys to the game was Millersville's defense against Gannon's three-point shooting. Gannon was one of the best long range shooting teams in the PSAC while Millersville's three-point defense was in the bottom half of the conference. The Marauders responded and held the Golden Knights to only 4-15 from the three point line during the game while holding the Golden Knights to only one made three pointer following the first quarter. Ultimately, with both teams making the same number of field goals and the discrepancy in three point shooting almost negligible, the game came down to the free throw line. Gannon made the most of their opportunities at the charity stripe shooting 21-23 from the line including 10-10 in the final minute of the game.
Junior
Jade Farquhar lead the team in scoring for the second time this season as she scored 18 points. The guard shot 7-12 from the field while also contributing three rebounds and one assist. Farquhar was a major contributor in forcing 20 Gannon turnovers. She lead the Marauders with five of Millersville's 13 steals while Hall and redshirt junior
Janelle Robinson combined for four each. Millersville finished with 17 points off turnovers.
Hall continued her double-digit scoring streak as she netted 14 points including shooting 6-8 from the free throw line. The guard lead the team in minutes played with 37 while pairing her scoring with two assists, four rebounds and the previously mentioned four steals.
The remaining starters experienced a forgettable day shooting that was out of character considering the Marauders had shot 50 percent or better in three straight games.
Millersville falls to 8-9 and 5-8 in the PSAC Conference. The Marauders remain one spot back of PSAC East rival Kutztown who holds the third spot in the division after the Golden Bears fell to East Stroudsburg. The Marauders return to Pucillo Gymnasium to host the aforementioned East Stroudsburg Warriors in a big PSAC East match up. The Warriors currently hold the second spot in the PSAC East and sit one game back of West Chester. Millersville will look to add to its 6-4 home record since the team only has three more home games after their game against East Stroudsburg.
