Millersville, Pa. - For the first time in program history, Millersville women's volleyball is 8-1 through nine matches. With a convincing sweep (25-22, 25-20, 25-18) of Mercyhurst Friday in Pucillo Gymnasium, Millersville scored its first win over the Lakers since 2011, won its PSAC opener for the first time since the same season and recorded the best start in school history.
Six of Millersville's (8-1, 1-0) eight wins have come in straight sets. Friday's win included a season-high seven blocks including 10 block assists. Freshman
Lindsey Blevins posted a match-high 13 kills to just three errors.
Erin Harman added her fourth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 11 digs. Harman also delivered two of Millersville's six aces.
Katie Laughman tallied her fifth double-double with 32 assists and 15 digs.
Millersville just got better as the match continued. After holding off the Lakers by two in the opening set, Millersville hit .308 in the second, recording 14 kills with two errors on 39 attempts. In the third, Millersville limited Mercyhurst to seven kills and a -.053 hitting percentage while controlling the net with a pair of solo blocks and four total blocks. Harman, Blevins and freshman
Grace Miller combined for all 11 kills while committing two errors in the deciding set.
It was Millersville's night from the opening serve of set one. The Marauders opened the match with four consecutive points and trailed only once (15-14) and only for one serve. A Blevins kill put the Marauders at set point at 24-22, but Mercyhurst pulled within one on successful attack from Alyssa Zirnheld. But Millersville's Laughman set up Ceriani for the set clincher, ending the Lakers' chances of a late rally.
In set two Millersville broke an 11-11 with Harman serving and quickly ripped off a 9-2 run thanks in part to four Mercyhurst miscues. Millersville led by at least four the rest of the way, and
Haley Butler finished the set with a kill.
Set three followed a similar pattern with Millersville turning an 11-9 advantaged into a 19-11 lead. Blevins served for five consecutive Millersville points and added to kills for her cause in the 8-2 Marauder run. Harman ended the match with her second ace of the night.
