Marauders start fast but can't close out Gannon

Millersvile, Pa. - Millersville raced to 9-1 leads in each of the first two sets in Saturday's PSAC women's volleyball match-up with defending PSAC champion Gannon. But in both sets Gannon rallied for two-point victories and ultimately swept the Marauders (28-26, 25-23, 25-15).

Millersville (9-2, 1-1 PSAC) registered 44 kills and hit .226 but the visiting Golden Knights, less than 24 hours removed from a five-set loss at Shippensburg, piled up 48 kills while committing just 10 errors and hitting .302. Gannon was led by Ally Smith, who totaled 14 kills without an error. Three Marauders reached double-digit kills with Erin Harman leading the way with 13. Lindsey Blevins totaled 11 and Haley Butler recorded 10 on 24 swings. Katie Laughman produced her sixth double-double of the season with 38 assists and 12 digs.

There simply was no panic in the veteran Golden Knights. When Millersville poured on the first eight points of the opening set (five came on Millersville kills), Gannon answered by finishing the set with 22 kills of its own. The comeback started in earnest with Millersville leading 20-14.

Senior Maggie Wilhem took over service for Gannon and Toni Leitshuh and Ashley Kerestes recorded three kills apiece to tie the set at 20-20. Gannon took a 21-20 lead--its first of the set--on a Marauder attack error. Millersville pushed back in front to lead 24-23 on a Kelsi Ceriani kill, but the set clincher was denied with Kerestes knotted the game at 24 with another kill. The clubs traded points until Leitshuh and Ally Smith went back-to-back for a 28-26 Gannon win. Carolyn Knollman totaled 18 assists in the first set alone.

Undeterred from the inability to finish off Gannon in the opening set, Millersville scored the first six points of set two, receiving two kills frm Grace Miller, one from Butler, one from Blevins and a service ace from Harman. For the second set in a row, Millersville ran the lead to 9-1 before Gannon started erasing the sizable deficit. Gannon chopped down Millersville's lead and took its own at 23-22 on a Millersville attack error. The Marauders fell behind 24-22 and momentarily staved off the Gannon win with a Harman kill. But Rebekah Smith finished the set with a kill off a Sara Crandal assist.

Set three belonged to the Golden Knights. Gannon totaled 17 kills to just three errors (.378). Six came from Ally Smith.Gannon scored five consecutive points early to build a 10-4 lead and never led by fewer than five points th rest of the way.

Gannon won its 10th consecutive match against the Marauders. Millersville's last win in the series came in 1994.

After hosting two teams from the PSAC Northwest this week, the Marauders head to Slippery Rock and Edinboro Friday, Sept. 29 and Saturday, Sept. 30 to round out play against the division.
