Greensburg, Pa. - The Millersville field hockey team got out of bed on the right side on Saturday, evidently. Coming off a tough loss at Shippensburg, Millersville poured on the pressure to rout Seton Hill, 6-0. The win was the 200th for Millersville head coach
Shelly Behrens.
Of Behren's 200 career victories, 123 have come in her nine-plus seasons at Millersville. She ranks fourth among active Division II coaches in career victories and is one of nine Division II coaches all-time to accumulate 200 wins.
On Saturday,
Erica Tarsi led the charge, scoring two goals and adding an assist in the victory. It was nothing new for Tarsi, who now has three goals and two assists in just four games thus far.
The win brought Millersville to 3-1 on the year (Seton Hill fell to 2-4). It came on the heels of one of the tougher games Millersville has played in recent years, as it was downed 6-1 by Shippensburg earlier this week.
But it wasn't just any win for the Marauders. Millersville dominated their opponent, overwhelming the Griffins with 23 shots and governing all aspects of the game to pick up the first shutout of the year.
Millersville put 14 of the 23 shots it took on goal, whereas Seton Hill only put six on target.
Kylee Bair and
Autumn Peters again split time in goal for Millersville. Both Peters and Bair were in lockdown mode, recording three saves each to aid Millersville to their first shutout since Nov. 4 of the 2016 season. Peters played the majority of minutes in the win.
Most of the action did not involve Bair or Peters, however, as Millersville held the upper hand in all the offensive categories.
Although Tarsi put up a career high in shots (7), shots on goal (3), and goals (2) there were plenty of other bright spots on offense.
On what was Tarsi's first assist,
Kathleen Bishop scored the first goal of the game just three minutes after play had begun. Bishop has enjoyed a red-hot start too, as she now has four goals in four games.
Towards the end of the first half,
Maci Langone and Tarsi were able to score with 1:05 of each other to give the Marauders a 3-0 lead that they would carry into the half. But the onslaught was just beginning.
In a game that had a little bit of everything, there were also a pair Marauder "firsts" as both
Emma Boutcher and
Annabelle Tierney scored their first collegiate goals.
Boutcher scored late in the second half to make the score 6-0.
Aliza Mizak gave Boutcher a perfect cross and the freshman took care of business, deflecting it in front of the cage for a goal.
Tierney's goal came early in the second half. This goal was also assisted by Mizak, helping the junior forward to her first ever two-assist game.
Tierney's goal gave Millersville a 4-0 lead at the time. Tarsi again followed up within minutes. Four minutes after Tierney's goal, Tarsi found herself with a penalty shot. She sent it home to wrap up a great performance for the sophomore.
The win ends a two game road stint in which Millersville went 1-1.
The Marauders return to action Wednesday Sept. 20 at home to take on East Stroudsburg.
