Millersville, Pa. – No. 1 East Stroudsburg (7-1) played its style field hockey Wednesday and the Warriors defeated No. 6 Millersville (3-2) 2-0 Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
Melanie Shambaugh enjoyed the moment that mattered as she drove home both goals in the game with each of them occurring in the second half.
On her first goal, Shambaugh recovered a loose ball, and through an over-crowded area, managed to take a shot. Marauder goalkeeper
Autumn Peters was obstructed on the play, and Shambaugh's shot ended up rolling in to give the Warriors all they would need. Â
Peters played well for Millersville, making six saves on 15 shots attempted by East Stroudsburg. However, Shambaugh was the one player who had her number, as she added a second goal later in the second half.
On Shambaugh's second goal, she weaved through a dismantled defense, gaining an open look at the goal. From there, she backhanded it past Peters to put Millersville up 2-0 with 1:35 remaining in the game. The goal was the nail in the coffin for Millersville.
The Marauders did not have many opportunities overall, but there were a few.
Courtney Weaver,
Erica Tarsi and
Emma Boutcher all had shots on goal, but goaltender Halle Frisco made the save on all three. Millersville took six shots throughout the course of the game.
The Marauders found themselves on offense less than usual, taking three corners compared to the eight that the Warriors took.
Late in the first half, ESU had one of its best opportunities of the game. Kelli Shapiro took a corner for the Warriors which opened up a window of good pass opportunities for East Stroudsburg. Eventually, Sydney McCarthy found herself wide open. McCarthy smashed a laser at Peters, but the freshmen keeper was unfazed, reacting quickly to make the save.
Most of the first half was played sporadically over the entire field. East Stroudsburg did have a few solid chances in the middle of the half. During a three minute stretch the Warriors had four shots, finding three of them blocked by defenders and one saved by Peters. Â
Peters played the entire game for the first time this season while making her second career start, falling to 1-1 as a goalie with the loss.
The Marauders return to action on Saturday when they travel to take on IUP in a rare 5 p.m. start time.
