Shippensburg, Pa. - Third-ranked Shippensburg (4-1) defeated second-ranked Millersville (2-1) 6-1 at Robb Sports Complex on Tuesday. It was the first loss of the year for the Marauders. The six-goal performance for Shippensburg marked the most scored against Millersville in game since Oct. 16, 2008.
For Shippensburg Brooke Sheibley took four shots, scoring twice; and Emily Barnard scored twice on three shots. Jazmin Petrantonio assisted on all six goals. Caitlyn Wink and Mary Spisak also added a goal for Shippensburg. Shippensburg owned the first half, scoring five times in 30 minutes.
Millersville may have outplayed the Raiders in the second half, totaling 14 shots to Shippensburg's 11 and holding a 7-6 edge in corners. Millersville forced Ally Mooney, who led the NCAA in goals against average in 2016, to make nine saves in the second period alone--13 in the game. Over the 70-minute affair, Ship attempted 25 shots, whereas Millersville put up 22. Even still, Millersville was only able to score once.
Kathleen Bishop had the lone goal for the Marauders. It was her third goal of the season. She put three shots on goal, and
Kyra Brakefield and
Aliza Mizak each put two shots on goal too, but Ship goalkeeper Ally Mooney was able to counter all but one Millersville shot. Bishop's goal came by putting back a rebound off her own shot.
Marauder goalie
Kylee Bair had four saves and
Autumn Peters, who subbed for Bair, also made four saves.
Millersville will have a redemption shot against Shippensburg later in the season at home. For now, there is one more road game in their back-to-back road game week. The Marauders will take on Seton Hill at 11 a.m. this Saturday.
